This is Sad. Its been my place for a drink for 12 years or so :(
All Blacks winning the world cup.
To many drinks with Cover Me Bad
Many many nights of trivia.
Took family there after both of my kids were born.
Baby Shower during FA Cup weekend.
Free shot the night my daughter was born.
Sitting at the bar with a 2 year old and no one else during a snowstorm.
The Monday session actually started in the Village Coach House, in Brookline Village, which went out of business in 1987. I don't remember exactly how soon afterwards it relocated to the Briar, but gotta be close to 30 years that the music's been playing -- pretty damn good. It was a very welcoming event for new musicians, or those newly arrived to Boston.
I'm sure the session organizers are even now making the rounds for a new venue.
The session scene here has often been a case where, after one dies, two more (eventually) take its place, at least for a while. But it's been sad to see places like O'Leary's (near Kenmore Square), The Skellig (Waltham) and PJ Ryan's (Somerville) stop hosting sessions, or go out of business altogether.
It's likely the Briar Group is just transferring that license somewhere more profitable for the Group (read: Seaport/Hotel/Corporate Tower partnership). Those guys could've retired a long time ago.
To be fair, they could likely get a neighborhood license for the place, its totally in "Brighton Main Streets", move the "everywhere" license somewhere else.
Is this the only one closing? As you may know, the Green Briar is in a chain of bars (the Briar group) which includes, Ned Devines, The Harp, Solas, MJ O'Connors, City Bar (both of them), City Table, etc etc
I trained as a host with Stump after several months of playing at Common Ground. First time I cracked the mic as a trivia host. What a long, strange trip it's been.
I hope Jerry is doing well. He was a Brighton lifer who worked for the MBTA. Great player and a nice guy.

thank god

End of an era. Sad.
Yup.
Played many a trivia night there. I'll have to try to get back before they close, but I'm not sure if my schedule will permit it.

Sorry to hear it. Their Monday sessions introduce a lot of people to playing Irish music.
Is there another bar that can host the session?
A good run

The Monday night sessions are legendary. It's a real loss to the music scene in Boston.
Hopefully they were able to
sell their liquor license for half a million dollars on their way to retirement.

I always hate to see a pub with a soul go out or be sold to some chain entity with no soul.
