When I was young and foolish I ended on on a couple of limited access highways on my bike by mistake or misreading maps. IIRC, you can go pretty fast on a bike down Route 2 from Lexington to Cambridge. :-) That said, had the cops stopped me I'd be cool with them getting me off the road. I knew it was wrong but I didn't know another way to get where I wanted to go.

Rt. 2 is weird. There are many east-bound on-ramps in Lexington and Arlington which don't have the typical signs prohibiting pedestrians/cyclists/equestrians. There is an unnamed access road in Arlington, from Pleasant to Park Ave, which is a popular category 4 climb on Strava (due to it's avg 4.8% grade for 1.25 miles) - it doesn't even look like a bike would belong there, but there's even a bike lane. Past Lexington, where 2 becomes two lanes each ways, there are no signs of any kind, I actually know a couple people who tried to bike to Walden Pond that way (overestimated their abilities and asked me to pick them up half way). There are plenty of bucolic New England roads like Page, Old Country in Lincoln which simply dead-end at Rt. 2, so you have to backtrack - if you know that you're not supposed to be on 2.

Seems like a safer thing would have been to surround him and ensure he exits, then arrest him. Doing it on a highway risks exactly what happens -- he makes a break for it into the traffic, putting his life and others in more danger.

I think an escort behind, to the exit, maybe an escort in front to help ensure the exit exit would be better than blocking two lanes at a low speed.
But no.
I don't do traffic stops.
I don't know what standard operations are for pullovers, but completely blocking two lanes with a low speed vehicles to protect a 3ft wide low speed vehicle seems illogical.
And really. One driver's psychological or intellectual assessment is another cyclist's psychological or intellectual assessment of a driver.
Drivers are far less risk averse for the idiocy they conduct above 40mph than most cyclists.
But hey, Safety Theater must go on!

I've been up the hill on Route 2 many years ago. Wide shoulder, nobody cared.

It's ridiculous that people are blaming the bike for causing an unsafe situation rather than the cars that go too fast and are intentionally unaware of other vehicles besides cars using the road.
Obviously Route 128 needs a designated bike lane so that cyclists can safely ride it.
