Cambridge Day reports the Cambridge zoning board has agreed to enforce a limit on live entertainment at local pubs despite the fact that the limit is not actually incorporated in the city zoning code. The specific ruling comes against Shine Square Pub in Porter Square - which is still embroiled in a lawsuit with the city over the way it doled out liquor licenses; in fact, it's the only plaintiff in the suit that is still open - but it could apply to clubs across the city.

Section G specifies "dancing and entertainment". The city needs to go pound sand.

Cambridge is just getting a jump on celebrating the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Winthrop Fleet. Puritanism has never really gone away.

None of this "no fun!" stuff is really historical Amish theology. They caught it from the Baptists and Methodists during the Second Great Awakening.

what current business owner is profiting when other pubs aren't allowed to add entertainment? And how much are they contributing to the zoning board members here?

Ah, zoning -- the best way to keep the city boring, and strangle the housing supply to keep prices up and benefit existing owners.
It is important to have a clear definition of a Section G dance hall. But at the same time, we might want to question why dancing must be prohibited at all in Business A, A1, A2, A3, and A4 zones. What is the problem this regulation is trying to solve, and who wants it this way?

Lower the noise levels in dining and drinking establishments. Not only can you not hear your server or your companions without screaming, it is very damaging to the hearing of people who work there.

So if I dance to a tune being played at a Cambridge pub should I fear being handcuffed and hauled off to jail!? Will the pub lose its liquor license? Shaming people for having a fun time with... (gasp!) live music and dancing?? Cambridge is creeping toward the dark ages with their draconian regulations.

This had me confused for a minute even after reading the linked article since no where does it mention that Shine Square Pub had taken over McCabe's.
I really hope the owners of all those places win out in court over the corrupt/inept Cambridge Commission. And it's determined whether or not there should be charges against some of the previous members of that commission.
