Providence Line locomotive gets a bit flamey; passengers evacuate as air turns gamey
By adamg on Thu, 07/25/2019 - 8:50pm
Passengers heading towards Providence had to evacuate their train in Canton Junction after the train experienced a "mechanical issue" that included the diesel belching fire, around 8 p.m. More flaming action.

Sad to say the new engines
Sad to say the new engines aren't going to make the 25 years the old ones did, and are still going. Gonna need a fare hike.
Yea I don’t see these making
Yea I don’t see these making it like the F40’s, some of which are already over 30 years old and being overhauled for another 20 years of service.
This Dumpster Fire should have been Bakers 18 bil BS backdrop
Not a State House room (bubble) with PR staffers clamping down on reporting
Can’t blame these dumpsters
Can’t blame these dumpsters on Baker, ordered by Patrick administration.
Unfortunately there is not a whole lot of new locomotives ordered these days, most agencies just rebuild the old work horses.
Can't really blame them on Patrick, either
Because they weren't the T's first choice; they were basically forced into buying them by the federal government.
Oh, they're going to blame Baker
You must be new around here.
I mean, the only guy who doesn't blame Baker is the guy who likes blaming a lot of the messes on the T on Dukakis.
Dukakis did things on the cheap
Back Bay Station. Porter Square Station. Braintree Station. etc. Dukakis needs to take responsibility for some of the T woes
There you are
Hope things are going well.
No worries
Plans are already underway to form a committee to study the feasability of selecting a panel charged with drafting a white paper on how to form a blue-ribbon commisison to deal with exploring the possibility of establishing best practices for local officials to act surprised and horrified when one of these results in mass casualties
And Charlie ...
has great hair.
Charlie found $825m more for South Coast Rail, $595m for the GLX
But could only find scraps for the Providence Line. Sorry everyone whoomp, whoomp. Somehow both South Coast Rail (now costing $1.8 billion) and the Green Line Extension (now costing $3.6 billion) are more important than the main NEC trunk line between Boston, Rt 128, and Providence. Baker is trash
The cult of Charlie
Please remember that Charlie is never ever ever responsible for anything that goes wrong on the T or the commuter rail, or the State Police, or the RMV. It's Beverly Scott's fault.
Charlie has made some noise recently about possibly running for a third term. Vote for him again, because he is not responsible for anything bad that happens. Charlie could stand in the middle of Fifth Ave, er , I mean Commonwealth Ave, with a gun and shoot someone and he wouldn't lose any voters, ok?
If crossed Comm Ave
He might not loose any voters but he'd be killed quickly by a speeding driver who wouldn't even stop to call the cops.
Not that I wish any physical harm upon anyone but there would be some justice in the world if the next pedestrian or transit user hurt or killed was someone who actually had a say in transportation policies.
I don't believe that
because Charlie would never stand in the middle of Comm Ave. He'd stay in his limo.
Michael, you NAILED IT!!!
Michael, you NAILED IT!!! That's where all our money went! And still no improvement!! Excellent.
No need to worry...
...that's just the afterburners kicking in. Ready to buzz the tower, Goose?
But Captain
I cann'it engage the worp drive. She's only an MBTA engine.
Doc Brown's second "fire log"
Doc Brown's second "fire log" kicking in. When the third one ignites, commuter rail service will hit 88 MPH (one-time only, for as long as it takes the locomotive to blow apart)
Notice how blasé people are?
The woman on the left is saying, "Yeah I'll be a little late, it's just ANOTHER flaming train."
The guy on the right paused from his call, thinking, "Well go on and blow up already."
Very similar to ...
The people on the platform at JFK/UMass in the video of that derailing Red Line train hurtling towards them in a series of blue flashes.
I would move a bit further
I would move a bit further away from the on fire / flaming machine attached to a giant diesel tank. But that is just me.
Not likely an issue
Diesel burns well, but one of it's features is that it doesn't explode in such a wide range of conditions as gasoline does.
Dramatic, but normal
This is a blown turbocharger, something that happens with diesel locamotives and the flames are part of a normal discharge of the resulting excess fuel vapor. It's actually a safety feature, not a bug. Unfortunately for the MBTA, the press likes to go with sensational headlines for and imagery, so they get a black eye for something that is not actually an operational or equipment flaw. Google "blown turbocharger locomotive" and you'll find some much more shockingly dramatic pictures.
Why is open flame a feature?
Why is open flame a feature? What's the alternative -- an explosion?
Or an outright conflagration
Flames are better expelled through the normal (mostly fireproof) exhaust, rather than in the combustion chamber and fuel lines, etc.
Sunday!!!
Sunday!!!
Sunday!!!
Sunday!!!
This Sunday at Wonderland!
Gravedigger!
Dutch Oven!
Demon Seed!
...and....
Train 831 to Providence!!!
I was thinking that same thing
I’ve seen this on video, and the locomotive just kept going.
