Blecch: Stay out of the Charles River Basin - and don't let your dog in, either

The Charles River Watershed Association reports a bloom of blue-green algae - which is actually a type of bacteria - in the Charles River between the BU Bridge and the Museum of Science. The stuff can kill dogs and make people pretty sick.

For people not clicking through to the Twitter thread: not all blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is toxic. However, in this case they've tested it and that's what they found, so this is not just a general "beware it might be bad better safe than sorry" statement.

The blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) sounds rather toxic! It's pretty scary. I wonder if all that excessive heat and humidity that we've been having could be a factor in the development of this toxic blue-green algae.
