He was a quarterback that despite lacking starter experience, due to being behind awesome QBs for his whole career (college and professional) , was able to lead the Patriots to a winning season. He is a good quarterback and has quite a bit of potential. Considering the hand he was dealt he did quite well and I wish him the best. I think he is better off with the Chiefs where he will be able to start rather then sitting behind Brady again.
The Patriots actually did not get a good deal in the exchange, but I read an article in Sports Illustrated (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/pete...) and the writer seems to think that it might have been Bill Belichick helping his friend out at the Chiefs, and making sure Cassell landed on his feet.

Either QBs are the biggest cog in the machine or they are not. If the system can run on autopilot we have no need for Brady Ill be the quarterback this year.
He was in the system, but was never in that starter position, it makes a big difference. Its one thing to practice at Foxboro every week and another thing to go out in a packed stadium against another team that would just assume kill you and come off with a decent season.

Bill taught Scott his player personnel skills. Bill was breaking down film when the rest of us were learning to touch ourselves. His player personnel guy will be whomever has been next in line to learn. That's the least of their problems.

Pats keep rollin' on
The Patriots are not a team governed by sentiment. Adam Vinitieri, Asante Samuel, and now Vrabel, gone.
I think they did OK getting a 2nd for Cassel, though I was a bit surprised they couldn't wrestle a first out of someone. But it's not a bad return for a guy who threw more passes last year than in his previous 7 seasons combined and who last August barely escaped getting cut. Let's wish him well. He's been a team player even when it meant squandering his talent on the bench.
Hopefully this Kevin O'Connell is ready to be No. 2. Even if Brady is ready, we learned last year that he's mortal like the rest of 'em.
A Good Deal
If it's a deep draft, why would you want a first round pick and the huge contract that goes with it? There are enough first round picks who have turned out to be busts that you're better off saving the money from a first rounder and applying to a free agent with a track record. The number three pick in the draft is a risky *financial* proposition and would eat up valuable salary cap space. My guess is that the Patriots didn't want the first rounder, and may have traded Vrabel to avoid cutting him due to salary concerns, or at least to avoid the hard question of having to sign him to another two or three year deal when his current one is up. In this scenario a top pick in the second round is worth more than a first and third round pick. Now the Pats can focus on reworking contracts for Wilfork et al and have some immediate flexibility to do it.
Under cover of night...
They put him out of the team overnight, no warning to us fans or anything. They didnt get first round draft pick for he and Vrabel and then to add insult to injury, they send Cassell out to Kansas?!?!?!
This was punitive and b*tchy, to avoid paying him next year and to clear some money under the cap, just in case they have to pay Tom more when he comes back. Anybody other than Tom who wants more money is summarily removed from the team... this is the Patriots way ((Aaaarrrgh!))
