As the new Orange Line cars become more familiar, more like home, riders are beginning to treat them just like the old cars, as Liz Lemongrab discovered this morning in car 1409. At least the seats on the new cars make it easier to tell if a liquid's been spilled on them.

Food and drinks are banned from subways. I had a coffee once and got on the train and some woman scolded me for having it. DC also takes a different approach to general cleanliness in regards to public property as well though.

Eh, when you have a commute that consists of a bus to a train to a train, it gets way over 12 minutes. I've definitely had my commute time be the only chance I can eat breakfast before work, so I'm not going to judge when someone is scarfing a bagel or drinking coffee on the train. (Dropping trash or dumping chips on the floor? Absolutely will judge.)

I often see people eating what almost amount to full meals on the T. With utensils and everything. This is as ridiculous as women I frequently see putting on full faces of makeup on the T with large amounts of accouterments that rival an artist's palette. What a lack of decorum. If people seriously do not have time to do these things in a more appropriate setting they really need to manage their time better.

it is possible to have an extra 15 minutes.
maybe these people have kids, maybe they dont get home from work the night before until very late and need that extra 15 minutes of sleep or solitude in order to not go insane, maybe they have no space of their own at home to put on makeup but being able to keep their job depends on arriving made up and ready to go, maybe a lot of things are going on in their lives that aren't going on in yours.
yes, eating strong smelling or messy food on the T is not ideal, I also find it unpleasant.
but someone in their seat doing their makeup on the literally affects no one else, and trying to shame those people leans real hard into classist nonsense.
someone at some point has had empathy with you, so try some empathy with others, not everyone's life is like yours.

It seems so personal that it's creepy to see someone doing it on the T. I don't mean a quick lipstick touch-up, or the perfunctory-ness of trying out makeup in a department store. But the whole face thing that I see women do on trains. It's like getting dressed or something that should be done in private. Not that it's the end of the world or anything, but I certainly wouldn't do it.

This is nonsense. I once worked two jobs (a full time and a part time), plus did volunteer work, and even managed to squeeze in a class (granted the class was only for two nights), and I STILL didn't have to resort to eating on the T. There are other places to eat and still meet all your commitments. People need to plan better or simply have a little more class.

Often there is stuff spilled on the floor on the Orange Line, usually a river of creamy coffee with many tributaries from someone's kicked over cup.
Rode the new train again last week, one of the cars was out of service. You can't make this stuff up. Nice, smooth ride, though.

Many years ago (ok, decades ago) I was on the Tokyo subway system. The padded seats were covered with a soft velvet material. I never saw a speck of dust anywhere. Not even a microscopic litter-bit. Nada.
(And please don't bring up that old baloney about uniformed shovers packing people into Tokyo trains like sardines. Yeah, I've seen the photo too, but that happens only at one station at one time of day during morning rush hour. Their trains aren't normally like that at all -- they run frequently, like clockwork, and I always got a seat with lots of empty seats available.)
Tokyo was the biggest city I was ever in by far (and I'm originally from New York, a small town by comparison)... and the Japanese were the cleanest, most considerate people I ever met.
The trains were wonderful and spotless. The people were incredibly well behaved. Culture matters. This is something that liberals tend to implicitly deny, but it's true.
Some people are barely civilized.
