The ultimate dry dock: One mapping service declares retired Navy destroyer now berthed in Franklin Park

Apple Map showing a retired Navy destroyer in Franklin Park

Wait, what's that next to White Stadium?

Eeka the alert Apple Maps user alerted us today that the mapping service is now placing the USS Cassin Young in Franklin Park, next to White Stadium. If it's on the Internet, it must be true, so we guess you'll need to stop going to the Charlestown Navy Yard to see the ship.

Oh, wait, Apple Maps was also the service that decided Methadone Mile was worthy enough to be noted on maps, so maybe hold that thought.

Can we lock up off leash dog owners in the ship’s brig? I’ve been attacked in Franklin Park by off leash dogs multiple times in the last year.

My son "hates" Google Maps, even though they are clearly superior.

(And my wife still Mapquests things too...)

There was apparently a new regional helipad in my rural neighborhood this summer, according to Gmaps.

In google maps, my dead end street is sometimes shown as ending in a nonexistent street, which goes out to a state highway.

So now and again we have random drivers screeching to a halt where the street ends, and then angrily turning around.

Several years ago, there was a petition to designate Newton Highlands as an historical district. It was voted down, and wouldn't have changed the name of that area, but Google has changed Newton Highlands to Newton Highlands Historical District on their maps.

Students from MIT stole the Cassin from its berth in Charlestown, and sailed it up the Charles to the Muddy River on a Spring Tide. There was a brief portage to Stoney Brook, to Canterbury, then dragged on rollers through Franklin Park. They can do the math.

When Apple Maps debuted, it had problems literally all over the map. For instance, it listed Roxbury District Court on Warren Street ... in Charlestown.

Early incidents of bad locations were fed to these services by datasets they were scraping from. A classic response to data theft is to serve bad values. If your goal is to go to court you don’t want them to notice (software, dictionaries, product descriptions). But sometimes it’s just as useful to have some fun and place their Golden Gate Bridge in the middle of the ocean while leaving yours right where it belongs.
