Another historically bad trade?

Michael Baumann: The Utter Disgrace of the Mookie Betts Trade.
It’s been 100 seasons since the Red Sox sold their best player in such a transparent cash grab. If there’s any justice, they’ll have another 86 years to regret it.
As the Boston City Councilor for the #Fenway, I would like to lodge a formal protest. Strongly against the hasty disposition of Boston’s major public assets. @mookiebetts #RedSox #BettsOff#bospoli #mapoli

Look
The guy was going to free agency either way unless we gave him 12 years $420m. Not worth it. Did we get hosed in prospects? Yes. Can we shed some $ and figure out a way to win? Yes. See 2013
Terrible trade
Hopefully the current ownership is run out of town in the next few years, the trade was THAT bad.
Oh come now
As much as I hate to lose Mookie I get this one:
1) his trade values is diminished because this amounts to a one year rental for the Dodgers. Mookie has made it clear he’s going to free agency for top dollar
2) the Sox need to get under the luxury tax for the long term health of the franchise, not because they are just being cheap. The longer they stay over the worse the penalties get, including I believe draft picks.
3) they knew they wouldn’t be able to keep him after this year so they had to get something for him with the farm system lacking at the moment.
4) how many titles has this ownership brought us since that 86 year drought? Let’s put the pitchforks away folks....
Nah
1) this is true but doesn't mean the Sox couldn't sign him at market value, like Strausburg on the Nats.
2) Paying luxury tax doesn't hurt the franchise, just means the budget is higher.
3) This does almost nothing for the farm system as it's a minor leaguer and a guy reading to play this year in the majors. Keeping Betts would have the same effect basically.
4) This ownership group has been great- they fucked up on this one.

I hope at least
John Henry gets a Broadway musical out of the deal.
But hey, maybe they can play "Sweet Caroline" between every inning and give the fans something to be excited about while we limp to a 75-87 record
Sweet
They should actually call the musical "Sweet Caroline". That would cure Fenway fans of ever wanting to sing it again.
The Globe's Kevin Paul DuPont started the chorus for you...

Finally
A reason to go on living!
let's get a new minor league team
if they start to stink, perhaps the bleachers ticket price will drop....
no it won't.
Collateral damage to get rid
Collateral damage to get rid of Price. Non performing assets beware, the honeymoon is over.
Hopefully they do at least a
Hopefully they do at least a full rebuild.
Lots of free time this summer
I guess I won't be watching baseball this summer and will have a lot more free time.

Looks like another winter of hard drinkin' and self-abuse.
I dunno. Maybe this is just
I dunno. Maybe this is just a case of moneyball where the dollars and stats make sense.
