Marian Walsh leaving

State Sen. Marian Walsh is resigning. More to come, but who'll run for her seat? Tobin? Rush, Consalvo? That guy who boycotted Gary's Liquors?

According to State House News....SEN. WALSH IN LINE FOR $175K JOB AT HEFA: The Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority is poised to offer a $175,000 assistant executive director position today to state Sen. Marian Walsh. Walsh, a West Roxbury Democrat, would take a job that has gone unfilled for several years, and at a time when the state is mired in a deep fiscal crisis, with heavy layoffs in state and local government

I was working on a freelance assignment (which is actually pretty cool and which hopefully I can talk about soon), when one of the people there rushed in and asked if I'd heard the news (which he'd heard from State House News Service). Even let me post about it, but I didn't want to take too much time.

Finally someone leaves the State House without a cloud over their heads! Good for her.

State House News reports she is considering a job ... $175K

Either the job is shovel ready, or the Commonwealth needs someone in that position to line up stimulus money for health and education facilities.

In other words, $175K might be an investiment if NOT having somebody in that position means losing out on millions of federal dollars.

Okay, the Globe has it. #2 at the commonwealth bonding authority for $175K a year, up from her $76K senate spot.

To your question, I predict John Tobin -- smart guy, great on constituent services, very politically clean. Plus, this is one West Roxbury building block replacing another. He's been looking for a step up and decided not to go against Menino. This is a logical and possible jump.

I would rather be at the City Level now too, Boston is in better shape then the state AND they have plenty of people to blame for the problems.

John Tobin is the real question mark. It'd be his seat to lose if he gets in.

Knock a hole through the ceiling - Marian's pension is going through the roof. Start putting your pennies away now - you'll be paying for it.

I dont think this postion will have an impact on state pension--this is not a state position

I think John Tobin should run and if he does he will be all his hands down!!!!

It's interesting how there's so much knee-jerk cynicism about Mass. politics -- some of which is wholly understandable -- that so many online comments here & elsewhere over the past week or so about Marian Walsh going into the Patrick Administration are themed as a hack moving jobs to pick up a big paycheck. Yup, it's a hefty salary for a public sector gig, but Walsh was not part of the Howie Carr hackarama crowd -- she was a very capable, hardworking, and thoughtful legislator, and my guess is that she'll do a very good job.

Rachel Kaprielian is another example of an excellent legislator (state rep for Watertown) who joined the administration, in her case for a non-glamorous job (motor vehicle registry) that nonetheless gives her a chance to apply her wonky public administration background (she picked up a master's at the Kennedy School as well as a law degree at Suffolk) to an agency that needs good leadership.

At the federal level, we think nothing of a President plucking senators and reps for an administration. It shouldn't be that different here.

I would like to see John Tobin become State Senator, Mike Rush replace John Tobin on the Boston City Council and Matt O'Malley replace Mike Rush for State Rep.

Also, O'Malley lives in JP now, I think.

It would be a pay raise and he could expand his network

Give her credit -- it's a more than symbolic pay reduction. I wish her well in this gig:

Most likely John Tobin will run and will be elected to her open seat. Mike Rush is already running. Another possible another candidate is Joseph Wells of Roslindale (a longtime supporter of Michael Flaherty) may also be considering a run for state senate. Things could get interesting when we are seeing a time for change.

That is the 2009 Mayor of Roslindale Joseph Wells who I heard is interested in the State Senate's seat and the Governor's Council seat.
