Honest to God: WAAF becomes a Christian station on Saturday

Enercom has sold WAAF, the Worcester station that gave us Opie and Anthony (who got fired not for encouraging women to whip 'em out on Wednesdays but for announcing that Tom Menino was dead in a car crash), to a Christian broadcaster, Inside Radio reports.

Radio is alive and kicking
Boston has perhaps the best radio market in the nation. You just need to know where to look.
WMBR = 88.1 = Best station in Boston, by far.
WZBC = 90.3 = Mixed bag but NCP is generally great.
WHRB = 95.3 = Excellent classical programming. Record Hospital good too.
WMFO = 91.5 = Very mixed bag but with some gems.
WUMB = 91.9 = Good as folk goes
The NPRs (89.7, 90.9) are good for news.
Can't say much good about WERS 88.9 but it's still better than commercial radio.
WZBC for country too
Forget the pop-country b.s. that the commercial stations play, Sunday Morning Country on 'ZBC is better on all counts.
What does WAAF
have to do with Boston? It doesn't even come in here. For real I get 94.1 WHJY Providence more clearly and consistently, even in Charlestown.

WERS and WHRB have a problem
They broadcast from the roof of One Financial Center in downtown Boston, which gives them excellent coverage; but a 51-story building is about to be built over South Station, right across the street. That will massively disrupt both stations' signals. The occupants of the upper floors of the new building will also have several kilowatts of radio energy in their faces, and that's going to cause no end of problems. I'll be surprised if any electronic device in that part of the new building works reliably.
WERS
What's wrong with WERS? They play a lot of music, including R&B and soul music evenings. They have a nice mix of music.
They do some good stuff
And some of us appreciate the Jewish-music program on Sunday mornings (perfect accompaniment for getting bagels).
But their general daytime programming? Ever since George Knight becaome program director, or whatever they call him, the station has created playlists that include, way, way too many greatest alternative hits of the '80s. Nothing against the Talking Heads, per se (I mean, I saw them that time they played the Orpheum back in the day), but on a college station? I want to hear stuff I haven't heard before. Good thing I also have 'ZBC as a pre-set, I guess.

Kind of historic
WAAF has kept playing rock without changing format longer than any other radio station in the area: approximately 50 years.
If current trends continue
Boston will soon have more Christian stations than Christians.

I hope in between imploring the faithful to fork over the cash, they honor 'AAF's past by playing Queensrÿche's "Jet City Woman" at least once an hour

Rock is dead.
Folks who listen to rock regularly are at least 40 most are older. Hence why there's only "Classic" Rock Stations. It's a demographic that just isn't appealing to advertisers because they're not easily influenced or spend happy, at least not radio advertisers- This was just a matter of time.

Those two are pretty much done. Opie had a brief and painfully unfunny radio show whilst Anthony launched Compound Media after a 2014 firing from Sirius stemming from racist tweets.

looks like they are keeping the format alive on HD2 radio and streaming though.
as butt as this station could be, i'll miss having an opportunity to hear one cool song a day. no other radio station is playing heavy music in the area. WZLX picked up some of the slack by playing some later metallica and increasing their Black Sabbath rotation, but its just the radio hits. Sometimes you just need to hear Slayer's "raining blood" on the radio to make your day better.
but fwiw, sirius and spotify are going to kill music radio all together. i listen to traditional radio on my morning commute solely for the news headlines, then i switch over to sirius for music.

I'm particularly thinking about the former WHDH 850 AM,once the highest rated station in Boston but now a satellite-fed ESPN station with no local content at all and pretty much zero ratings. I can't understand why Entercom kept it while trading away WRKO and WBZ to Eyeheart.

The saddest three events in Boston radio since 1980:
#1: WFNX dies.
#2: WBCN dies. (Not #1 because they had gone so far downhill by the time it was all over.)
#3: The impending death of WAAF
Technically, WAAF is not a Boston station
It's a Worcester station. From its old transmitter site on Asnebumskit Hill, it used to put out a signal you could hear from one end of the Mass Pike to the other.
WSRS ("Worcester's Stereo Radio Station") still has a tower on Asnebumskit Hill; it's actually the oldest FM station in New England (1940). The tower WAAF used to use is older yet; it was built by Major Armstrong, the inventor of FM radio, for the very first New England FM, now long defunct. But WICN and WBPR (WUMB) still use this tower.

No, WSRS started as W1XTG in 1940
It was owned by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and changed its call sign to WTAG-FM after the war, when it moved from the old 43 - 50 MHz FM band to the current 88 - 108 MHz band. When Norman Knight bought the station from the newspaper in 1963, he changed the call sign to WSRS.

Face it, terrestrial radio has been dead for years now. Will you really miss the same 15 songs from WAAF? Now if we could only get rid of that embarrassing dinosaur KISS 108.
Exactly...it's the music, not the station.
I'll admit I enjoy the entire range of music. Growing up in the 1980s/1990s, I liked NWA, Beastie Boys, Led Zepplin, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Naughty by Nature, etc (adding in classic rock and even classic/outlaw country) Hell I could even tolerate a little boy band hits if they were catchy.
Maybe I'm just getting older but Rock and Roll and music simply died for me at some point (1999? 2005? 2010?). There is no more Pearl Jam, there is no hip hop/rap that I like, country has some new stuff and even that is rare these days.
So yea, I can't listen to the same 15 songs anymore. I can hook up my pandora/spotify to my car and listen to whatever I want (which I am sure is killing radio the most)
