I had a Zoom Telephonics dial-up modem
Different company from the video-conferencing software, but I think they're still around too.
Who's Zoomin' Who?
Zoomin
Love these distractions
Send it to Zoom!
Locally produced children's shows were a big deal for kids back then. My sister was on Boomtown with Rex Trailer and my brother was on Major Mudd
Locally produced, nationally broadcast
WGBH produced Zoom for PBS which sent it all over the country.
I do remember locally-produced "franchise" commercial-TV kids' shows like Romper Room and Bozo the Clown, which had different hosts but similar format from one city to another.
Yup, i was on Bozo twice!

web-conferencing
its interesting how zoom is the new soup-du-jour these days. is there a technological reason ?
skype used to be the google it of years ago. and then goggle hangouts took over. cisco i-phone (now webex) is what most corporations supported. apple facetime was the generic since the last few years... and now since last 2 weeks, all the news shows doing remote interviews mention zoom.
Facetime requires Apple products
while Zoom runs on anything: MacOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux
yeah i know (thumbs-up), but
yeah i know (thumbs-up), but skype, goggle-hangouts, webex also run on everything.
Not on Linux they don't.
Not on Linux they don't. Skype (Microsoft) has been limping around with it's dead weight Linux client. Hangouts have been so butchered by Chrome Browser specific do-dahs that Firefox, Chromium or breathing the wrong way makes it die. WebEx does work, but it's so clunky.
For Free Software smooth jazz, we use jitsi.org , no zoom here.
Lot of possible factors
Cost, ease of setup, feature set, ability to handle the number of people that you want to have on the call, etc. Slack has a call feature and can do screen share but that's built on top of slack - if you're only interested in calling and not in a chat, it's not a good choice. My company has used join.me which is also good for voice/screensharing, but zoom may just be a lot easier to set up and send people links where they can just click and join without a lot of agida.
+1; i havent used it. i work
+1; i havent used it. i work from home since 2004 and my corporation set us up with i-fone(webex) so its easy for me to send invites (even to my parents) since my desktop support team remotely installed the outlook integration for me.
Skype, Teams, Slack, all
Skype, Teams, Slack, all tacked videoconference on top of chat clients, and are clumsy compared to the Zoom client that just does one thing well.
Be the best at something.
That would be broadcasting video of your technically clueless, teleworking colleague taking a dump.
Anyone know where any of
Anyone know where any of these kids are today?
That zip code
My first post-college apartment was in Allston.
When I gave my parents my mailing address, my mother immediately recognized the zip code and asked if I lived near WGBH.
