End of the road for some dirt-bike and ATV riders as BPD cracks down on illegal on-road use

Boston Police report a weeklong crackdown on weaving, stunting dirt bikes and ATVs and their drivers.

Between May 8 and May 15, police say, they arrested 18 people and seized 30 dirt bikes, mopeds and ATVs.

Officers are banned from chasing stunters through traffic because of the risk of causing crashes, but they are free to go after people on bikes and ATVs who have come to a stop - or who lead them to caches of the vehicles in backyards.

Among the incidents cited by police:

At about 7:45 PM on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, officers assigned to the Auto Theft Unit made an onsite arrest and recovered illegal dirt bikes in the area of 52 Hecla Street in Dorchester. While on patrol in the area of Park Street in Dorchester, officers observed two individuals operating dirt bikes without their helmets. Officers further observed the individuals going through red lights, weaving in and out of traffic, and traveling on the wrong side of the road all while operating at a speed greater than reasonable. Officers observed multiple vehicles move out of the way due to the operators’ unpredictable movements. The operators were observed lifting the front wheel of the dirt bikes and weaving from side to side on Adams Street before quickly turning onto Hecla Street where they brought the dirt bikes to the rear of a residence on the street. One of the males hurriedly entered the residence while officers were able to take the second male into custody. The other male was identified and issued a citation. Officers impounded the two dirt bikes as well as a moped which were located in the rear of the residence on Hecla Street.

Also:

At about 7:49 PM on Friday, May 15, 2020, officers assigned to the B-3 (Mattapan) Auto Investigations Unit responded to a radio call to assist another unit with a vehicle investigation in the area of 8 Elwyn Road in Dorchester. On arrival, officers observed a male in the rear of the aforementioned location revving the engine of a yellow dirt bike. The male fled the residence as officers continued their investigation, locating the yellow dirt bike, as well as two additional dirt bikes and a moped from the rear of the residence. All four of the recreational vehicles were towed from the scene.

I'm so tired of this noisy, dangerous behavior.

Good. Hopefully this will cut down on the deafening speeding of these critters at 2:00 A.M. down the Morton Street Rotary Freeway (formerly Casey Arborway Overpass).

This happens annually. It’ll be business as usual

Does anyone know what happens to the confiscated bikes once they’re processed? I assume they go to auction if they’re seized without a title and/or valid papers, but if someone could point me in the right direction it would be very much appreciated.
I’m nearing 40 years-old and my hooligan days are long, long gone, but I’m still very much a motorcycle hobbyist and custom builder. I’d love to get started on a new project or two (or three...) while I’ve got some free time and decent weather on my hands.
Many thanks in advance!

the Frontage Road lot and they usually have a couple shipping containers literally STACKED with bicycles, dirt bikes, scooters, ATV's, etc.

The city has auctions for most of this stuff but it's not widely advertised.

I saw and tried to get my hands on a couple old Puch mopeds that had apparently been stolen awhile back but the owner(s) must have shown up before the auction occured.

With the reduced traffic this is probably the best time for that kind of riding that we'll ever see.

Probably should've just let that go for now.

With the reduced traffic this is probably the best time for that kind of riding (to kill off the stupid idiots with minimized collateral damage) that we'll ever see.

This shit is in no way limited to Boston or to cities. Both "stunting" and illegal racing seems to have spread around the metro area.

Although the most unexpected place I've seen dirtbags on dirtbikes has to be between Hyde Park and Piccadilly Circus in London, LOL.

Y’all gotta pick one either they ride around on bikes having fun or they’re standing around in groups.Either way y’all will complain right lol. This is coming from someone who did both as a youngster. Gave us the feeling of “damn well what can we do then”.

I feel for you if the only options you could come up with in your youth were riding around recklessly on a dirt bike, scooter, 4 wheeler or standing on the corner doing nothing. I hope you've expanded your adult mind.

Maybe your mind needs expanding. Do you assume everyone grew up just like you? With the same environment and options?

Problem solved, this means those kids will just say aw shucks and go home and start reading in their bedrooms the rest of the summer, right? /s

I swear the police and gov't love to look tough on the symptoms but little progress to find solutions to the problem.

Loud bike noises in the city are a problem? Can you do something about the gunshots first? Because gunshots -> screaming -> sirens -> are far greater a nuisance than kids playing on dirt bikes.
