Boston Restaurant Talk reports Bar Boloud in the Mandarin Oriental on Boylston Street is blaming Covid-19 for its decision to shut down.

I'm hearing there are staffing shortages everywhere. Expect more closings as people recognize the risk reward tradeoff in this industry is out of balance.

Workforce decline

A significant part of the food service workforce left town in April when colleges and universities closed down.

The fact that someone with a valid unemployment claim gets $600/week also makes it a bad deal to go back to work for a low paying gig like washing dishes. So, you know, staffing shortages due to the fact that employers don't pay livable wages is a more glaring problem now.

We don't value labor in this country very much, which is a bummer.

I hear what you're saying but can you say it a different way than, "People who are getting $600 from the government won't work a job that pays $600 a week."

He's saying that people who are getting $600 a week in unemployment won't go back to jobs that pay $510 a week, especially when their minimum-wage gig won't provide sick time, health insurance, or PPE in the middle of a pandemic.

It’s 800 Boylston Street. Not like the place was doing a stellar business before the current crisis and had a snowball’s chance of lasting past baseball season anyways (the staff palpably hated anyone who dared enter and expect any level of general civility), but it’s not Chinatown.
