Life has its ups and downs at dorms

The Berkeley Beacon, which is the paper at Emerson College, reports on a pair of elevator-related incidents:

On March 26, Emerson police and building maintenance guys had to rescue 15 people trapped in an elevator in the basement of 180 Tremont St.; one person "was complaining of claustrophobia." The very next day, a student "close to hysteria" was rescued from a stuck elevator at 150 Boylston St.:

Facilities was able to open the door and the student was calmed down with no further need of medical attention.

Did Suffolk University sells it 150 Tremont Street dorm? Or is this (for shame!) a mistake on Universal hub? Say it ain't so - or just correct the mistake.

Who owns 180?

It's their Ansin building. Although there's no way any of the elevators in there that I know of could hold 15 people...and if they did, I'd be pretty damn claustrophobic too.

Any UniversalHub readers ever live in 6 Arlington? Do you remember the Ghettovator? I have many fine memories of it getting stuck, prying open the door myself and climbing out.

150 Tremont Street is actually a Suffolk Dorm. Suffolk's elevators are a lot worse than anything that Emerson has.

http://media.www.suffolkjournal.net/media/storage/...

"According to the Suffolk University police log, there have been at least 15 incidences, beginning August 31, 2008, where people have been trapped in elevators all around campus.

Elevator entrapments have occurred in nearly every building on campus this year - including 150 Tremont Street, the Sawyer Building, 10 West Street, the Donahue Building and Miller Hall.

Of the 15 incidences reported in the log, six of them occurred at the 150 Tremont St. dorm. "

They're Both Emerson Dorms, The street names were just reversed here @ UH (oooooooh the humanity!! :-P)

"Thursday, March 26

• Officers responded to the basement of 180 Tremont St. where fifteen people were stuck in an elevator. One of the elevator occupants was complaining of claustrophobia. ECPD, facilities and the occupants of the elevator were able to force the doors open and free the occupants.

Friday, March 27

• Officers responded to 150 Boylston St. for a student who was stuck in an elevator on the fourth floor and was close to hysteria. Facilities was able to open the door and the student was calmed down with no further need of medical attention."

...but Suffolk Elevators are a well shielded death trap (nice coverup Sargent - is that what you spend your millions on?). when I lived at 150 Tremont Street (a few years ago) we held a poker game in one of the Elevators, they got stuck so often that we figured we should make ourselves comfortable.

Anyone stuck in an elevator should call 911 and get the fire department on the scene, especially if there are medical issues. Don't rely on campus police or anyone else short of an elevator mechanic to safely get people out of a stuck elevator. I guarantee the administration does not allow their employees to call 911 because they don't want to pay for damage that may occur when firefighters force the doors to get people out. People die every year in botched elevator rescue attempts.
