Channel 7 to Jay Leno: You kinda suck, man

Michael Page reports that Channel 7 management thinks its viewers would rather see more Frances and Kim news at 10 p.m. than Jay Leno. No word on when, if at all, they'll show his new show, which will appear at 10 p.m (9 p.m. Central) in the rest of the country.

The Herald reports NBC is threatening to pull 7's network affiliation if it doesn't stop this nonsense right this second.

to channel 27 (now Univision -- but it's in Worcester and probably has uneven signal penetration in metro Boston)?
to channel 38 (no longer a UPN affiliate)?
to channel 68 (now independent)?

The Herald article talks of NBC having an unused license in Boston, but I have no idea what channel that could be.

Univision? It's NBC owned. They could move regular univision programing to a digital substation... Probably not ideal.

I with the FCC website was easier to figure out. I'm sure the info on NBC's other licenses is on there somewhere.

It's ShopNBC. That might be more likely.
Wikipedia says NBC owns 37% of the station.

Oh 38 sounds great! Just um. CBS owns it already.

After the June 12th DTV switch, ONLY WHDH-DT will retain its channel numbber: 7, but with about a 90 per-cent reduction in effective radiated power, although the predicted coverage area is SUPPOSED to be the same for digital. Channel 2 analog becomes 19 digital; 5a to 20d; 4a to 30d; 25a to 31d; 38a to 39d; 44a to 43d (4 channels); 56a to 41d; 62 a (off-the-air)to 18d; 68a to 32d. West of 128: 27a (now off the air) to 29d; 48a to 47d; and 66a to 23d. It's like FM radio...all stations then will be created equal, just some more equal than others, such as heritage call letters, etc. NBC could buy channel 18 for peanuts, boost it to a non-directional antenna with maximum power and come out even with channel 7 on DTV.

WGBH is very proud of being channel 2. It's part of their basic brand identity. Why do they have to get a new channel number?

Aside from WHDH's shoddy sensational journalism and excuses for anchors (I stopped watching when Randy Price left - he was the last decent thing about their news) - do they really think that people want more repetitive news?

I'm assuming their morning coverage runs 7 to 9 am. Then 12 to 1 pm. 4 to 6.30. And now 10-11.30?

That's 7 hours of news per day. If people want constant television news, I really don't think they'd bother with channel 7.

Oh, wait. Maybe that's their latest gimmick. "7 on 7!"

Pretty sure the morning news is 5 to 7am. Then the national feed takes over.

Oops. I meant to write 5 to 7; I actually catch parts of Today in the 7 to 9 spot - my brain wasn't on when I wrote that, apparently.

There's The WHDH Girlie Show in the late afternoon, which they repeat at 11pm, but I wasn't aware that there was any sort of journalistic programming on its schedule. I guess I'll have to watch a little closer.

Scott Fybush, who knows New England broadcasting, suspects that Channel 7's Ansin is trying to stage a revolt by other NBC affiliates against the whole Leno-at-10 thing.

It's a kinda stupid idea that isn't even going to last for a full season. If we really wanted to get conspiratorial about it, we could suspect that this is a trial balloon so that NBC can say "Well, we thought it was a good idea, but those darn station managers revolted, so of course the ratings stink..."

Out of the network stations in Boston, channel 7 is by far the worst. They give you 2 and a half hours of the news from 4 until 6:30 and now they want to give 1 and a half hours? This is stupid. Their lame compelling ads make them look cheap. The team of Frances Rivera and Kim Casey is easily the worst combo in town.

Where else would you go for the latest on B-list celebrity gossip and who died in a car wreck last night?

You can also learn the latest twists in your favorite NBC reality shows and scenes from the upcoming show finales and sweeps ploys!

Also, Hank Phillippi Ryan (the only woman in the world with three men's names) investigates why Channel 7's news van gets more miles per gallon than Channel 25's!

Their news is just awful. But then most local coverage is pretty awful. The whole Hank Phillippi Ryan thing is just such a joke. In they're promo for her, they show her screaming at somebody for "selling a van that doesn't run." Pure idiocy. Anyway, they'll probably cave when NBC brings the hammer, which I hope they do. The last thing I need is more local crap.

my viewing choices are a watered down "Tonight Show" or 1 1/2 hours of "If it bleeds it leads"? This is why I download "Trailer Park Boys" At least it's a show that knows it's stupid.

Like Boston needs more hours of news per day. Of course, what local TV calls news is rather pathetic. Reading the first paragraphs of a story from the Globe/Herald, press releases from companies (Google, Apple, Dominos, etc.), car chases in Kansas, and celebrity updates don't serve the locals.

Has anyone watched anything on WHDH's "This Boston" on its DTV subchannel (7.2)? It used to be nonstop weather, which was somewhat useful, but now it's old movies and like TV Land.

This TV is a national network designed for digital substations. After NBC Weather Plus went under at the end of 2008 many networks picked up This TV. You can watch it on comcast 297 too. It's great if you love old B-movies.

Ah, I didn't know the weather station disappear on its own.
