WBUR reports the state came to an agreement with teachers unions to push back the start of school by two weeks to give teachers a chance at doing what needs to be done to prevent Covid-19 outbreaks in their classrooms. The move means the 2020-21 school year will officially be 170 days long, instead of the usual 180.

At some point hopefully everything will normalize but let’s do this right!
Conducting Quality Control HVAC inspections with daily results online for starters would be great.
I know everyone is frustrated but this is very serious. We don’t want to extend this thing for years!!

I wonder what the scenarios are that they've predicted for reopening schools in terms of how many lives they are willing to sacrifice?
And I wonder what their reclosing plan is?
The only plan I heard that made any sense from a public health official was to find ways to safely open in August and shut them again once we hit Thanksgiving (and full on flu season).
Trying to do the exact things we used to do on the exact schedule (or close to it) during a pandemic is a recipe for disaster.

It's more like to let an organization with 70k+ participants and a $1.3B budget do what an organization with 2k+ participants and a $2b+ budget could not.
Wait...
What are they doing in those two weeks

that they can't start doing now or at least the two weeks before labor day? If they are going to start two weeks late, they should take away the week long vacations in Feb & Apr and instead give them long weekends those weeks.

It's a stalling tactic -- wait and see if things look "better enough" by the end of August that schools can justify using their Plan A (full face-to-face) or Plan B (hybrid).
Right now most of us are sitting ducks. Preliminary plans are due July 31 and my district will ratify final plans on the 11th (I think that date is universal, not sure). I know the plan will change between those two dates and I'm sure it will change even more after that. I'm not wasting my (unpaid) time making lessons and plans now that I need to junk in 5-6 weeks.

Why are you assuming that no work is being done currently to prepare?

Something has to change here. 10 days of school is 5% of the school year. To sacrifice that learning time, before this unpredictable year has even begun, is a massive leadership failure for students.
Administrators are all

Administrators are all working like crazy on it right now, but its gonna take more than just a few days to figure everything out with all the teachers when they get back.
