Duckling recovered; to be reunited with his family, feet

Associated Press reports Pack the Duckling was found on Mt. Vernon Street on Beacon Hill. He was found early this morning, according to a laconic tweet from Boston Police:

BRONZE DUCK stolen from Public Garden has been discovered abandoned on a Beacon Hill Street.

Mt. Vernon St. gives the appearance of a UMass Boston culprit. Presumably either it was one, or someone wanted it to look that way.

Please, kids, why not just get a rock that you paint over and over? Just a couple weeks ago, I walked past a guy spray-painting the BU rock, in afternoon broad daylight, with only a dark hoodie to conceal himself, and nobody cared.

It was this Mt. Vernon Street, not the one by the Bayside Soon-to-be-an-Ex-Expo-Center.

Apologies to UMass Boston people.

I'll unwedge my foot from my mouth now.

If you don't know Mt Vernon st., you don't know Boston - at all. I recommend walking tours - they'll be starting soon:

Not when we live in a city with two LaGrange streets, two Mt. Vernon streets and 65 gazillion Washington streets.

I can think of at least 3 Mt. Vernon Sts - Beacon Hill, Dorchester & W. Roxbury. And that's true of lots of street names.

And there's a Mt. Vernon st. in West Roxbury, but I wouldn't expect anyone to know that unless they lived there. But it's Mt. Vernon st. - one of the most famous names on Beacon Hill and in downtown Boston.

And Adam, that was hardly harsh. Certainly far less harsh than your regular sniping at the Herald. Funny how Boston needs two newspapers and long as one of them tells you what you want to hear.

Personally, I have the Globe bookmarked, but I see no need to denigrate the Herald.

I've walked all over around there, but never had need to learn the street name.

If it matters I forgive you!

The problem is google maps and the other map services and the city of Bostons lack of street name diversity. Im always amazed when Im looking for some little side street in downtown/Beacon Hill online and it sends me to the Somerville border lol. Then I have to go find the zip code to make sure I get the right place which can be annoying.

I agree with you, I am a lifetime Boston area resident and have been going into Downtown/Beacon Hill etc for years and years and do not know the names of half the streets. I tend to follow land marks, mainly because with this being Boston street signs are hard to come by, and some of the intersections have 6 streets crossing so street signs are useless. The previous commenter was acting like you asked where City Hall or the State House were... oh um well it depends on which one I guess cause there are two of both of those as well!

Boston Police elaborate on their tweet:

On April 7, 2009, at approximately 2:40am, Officers assigned to Area A-1 (Downtown), responded to the area of Brimmer Street @ Mt. Vernon Street for a report of a vigilant citizen that located the missing duckling "Pack". On the previous day, "Pack" went missing sometime during the overnight hours.

Officers arrived on-scene, and spoke with vigilant community members that were walking in the area of Mr. Vernon Street when they observed an object next to a tree. Upon further inspection, they recognized the object as the missing duckling. They immediately called BPD to report their findings.

Officers safely transported "Pack" back to Area A-1 (Downtown) where he was secured. "Pack" is currently in good health at the Department of Parks and Recreation.

In other words: If it lies there next to a tree like a bronze duck, and it gleams like a bronze duck, it's probably a bronze duck.

When I called home in 1994 to tell my folks that I was moving to Boston, my mom said, "oh, you'll be where the ducklings are," and she proceeded to tell me how she read "Make Way for Ducklings" to her kindergartners every year when she was a schoolteacher. When she visited Boston a few years later, we made a point to visit the bronze ducklings.

Since then, I've always had a soft spot for those ducklings and enjoyed seeing all the little kids get such a kick out of them. It takes a real jerk to vandalize them, even as a prank, but I'm glad the Pack is Back.
