I remember reading an article at the time that Pret-a-Manger first expanded into New York-they talked about testing and learning that sandwiches in the UK are "wetter" than what most Americans like, so they adjusted accordingly.
I thought their soups were kind of a rip off until I went to Clover.
They weren't cheap but compared to other places downtown that aren't fast junk food chains they were one of the less expensive options. They had a decent vegetarian selection. We already lost Au Bon Pain. Sorry to see them go.
Not that I will likely be back down there working any time soon.
Clover works with local, fresh ingredients and treats their staff well. It's expensive to operate even without those constraints. What's the "rip-off"?
A tiny cup with almost an inch of empty space at the top for about the same price as a large soup at Pret. Their ingredients are fresh too. For what you can realistically expect to pay downtown I always thought they were a decent value.
Their website says all three locations open. Of course, there can be a lag updating a site when there's a major disruption to normal business operations...
Of course. Not surprised. Workforce is no longer in the office buildings and going there to eat for coffee breaks and lunches. How on earth could they afford the rents with no customers?
We staying near the DeGaulle airport in Paris, when we were flying back from France, and we walked around a mall across from our hotel and we actually got a coffee and a treat from at Pret a Manger in Paris.
I thought I was slow on this but I guess not as I noticed the DTX one had closed as the signage was gone on saturday, I just assumed I had missed the news....
I have eaten at many Pret a Manger's in various European countries. I think of them as the Eurpoean Panara; good quality, fairly healthy, chain restaurants. However, even though there is one 2 blocks from my office, I've never eaten at a US Pret. Sorry I didn't support them, but apparently I wasn't the only one.
And I am ever allowed back to my work office would have gone back. But yeah, with so many people still at home it’s hard to stay in business. They are a great place to grab something on lunch break, but not a place I wanted to go out of the way for.

That's a shame!
I really liked them and grabbed stuff often when I worked Downtown. It was fresh, good-quality and super-quick.
I guess I can stop lobbying them to open a Harvard Square location now.
Or
Pret a fermer
Quel dommage
Tant pis
The ones in the UK are pretty good
The ones in the US, not so much.
I never understood why they didn't just copy the sandwiches verbatim.
agree
Ate at one in Heathrow in 2007, when they opened one near our office I was enthusiastic, but the quality of the food was mediocre and expensive.
The New Yorker wrote about this

I have never had a good experience at Clover.

Almost any place?
That is pretty easy. Sub the sandwich or soup and even cheaper down the street in Chinatown.
Panera
And I do believe there is a Panera within a block of the Pret on Boylston Street.
Of course. Not surprised.

Yogurt
Sigh. I would get the granola and Greek yogurt cups from them a few times a week. Au revoir Bircher Muesli!
