Woman managed to escape would-be rapist in Public Garden

Boston Police report looking for a man they say grabbed a woman and tried to rape her in the Public Garden around 6 a.m.

On arrival, detectives spoke with the victim who stated that she was walking inside the park when she was approached by a male suspect who placed his hand over her mouth while making sexually explicit threats and attempting to remove an article of clothing. The victim was able to free herself from the suspect’s grasp and flee to safety.

Police described the suspect as Black, in his 20s or 30s with a slim build and short dreads.

Thank you for reporting this. This is incredibly traumatizing for the person victimized. I hope she is doing as well as possible.

It must've been really, really upsetting for her to be the victim of this kind of attempted assault, even though she was able to fight free and get away.

The linked article says the Public Garden, not the Common. (Maybe it was updated?)

I saw "downtown" and stupidly assumed the Common, since the Common is at least partly "downtown," while the Public Garden is not. My apologies.

The Public Garden is indeed reclaimed land from the Back Bay of the Charles River. But it's not really considered to be part of the Back Bay. NABB doesn't claim it (their border is Arlington St.) BPDA considers it to be part of Beacon Hill. DND combines Beacon Hill and the Back Bay.

Unfortunately, criminal activity is par for the course in that area. Seems like the criminals are taking it up a notch. Some day, it would be great if the city took an interest in cleaning up its crown jewel, but major drug busts, stabbings, and shootings don't seem to compel them to do it, so let's just see how bad it can get.

I'm not clear how major drug busts are not a part of cleaning up the problems that concern you. Please explain.

Hate to break it to you but rape/sexual assault on women isn't "taking it up a notch." It's something we deal with every minute of every day. Taking it up a notch would be actually believing the victims, making it safe for for them to come forward and not dragging everything the victims have done in their life to make them look like "they deserved it." Oh, and men calling each other out on rape culture. THAT would be taking it up a notch.

I, and about fifty other people, were in the Garden by 6 am Monday. It’s gotten pretty busy with runners and dog walkers finally returning in the early hours.
Check the cameras. Just saying.
