Volvos may really be safe, but you probably still don't want to drive one the wrong way down Memoral Drive

Volvo on the wrong side of Memorial Drive

Matt Morong reports he was perusing Volvo's line of hybrid and electric vehicles when he came across this dramatic image of a Volvo SUV blithely being driven outbound on the inbound side of Memorial Drive near the Longfellow Bridge.

I can't imagine anything less safe than driving the wrong way down Memorial Drive in a gigantic SUV.

Keen-eyed observers noted the car has a Swedish license plate, and suggested maybe it was just Photoshopped in by an intern in Stockholm or somewhere.

....searching fruitlessly for an image of Bernard's Volvo heading to (from) the "skyline" of Cicely (Roslyn) in Northern Exposure....

Now I feel old.

That’s how cars are advertised now: drivers who can’t pay attention to anything and must rely on collision alerts and such.

Like all the Nissan ads showing idiot drivers backing up while looking at paint samples -- thank God Nissans now come with bright blue circles that protect people like that.

Driving on the left side of the road was the practice in Sweden until 1967.

Must have been an entertaining year to drive in Stockholm.

Actually, it was an interesting day. They switched overnight!

Driving on the left side of the road still exists in the British Isles and United Kingdom today.

Be that as it may, the Cambridge depicted in the ad is most definitely not the Cambridge in England.

Or, as some like to say, Ireland.

I watched a comic movie set in that period that had drivers who crossed the border from Norway having to stop at a crossing point and lift the arm up to make sure they crossed over to the "correct" side.

I think the reason for the mistake is that white lane markers don't denote single direction traffic in Europe. This is probably just photoshopped and the designer thought they were putting the car on the right side by putting it in the right lane.

Yes they do. In Europe white dashes can represent lanes going in the same direction: https://goo.gl/maps/ZLDGe2SCKiLA6mLP7

However, white dashes can also separate traffic in opposite directions: https://goo.gl/maps/h8mjXHctkJGt5UPdA . I don't know how you're supposed to know which thing the dashes mean.

Couldn’t have been worse than 2-way auto traffic on Commercial St. in Provincetown.

If there's a one way or no right turn sign here, I can't spot it. https://goo.gl/maps/qpmopN3L2r42Mgc58

before you got there was this with a sign clearly indicating U-turn

Ok, but that’s not how signs are supposed to work. A sign at the previous turn saying where a ramp goes does not ban going other places later on. There has to be a One Way or No Right Turn sign.

Plus the sign is nonstandard.

How do we know which way the car is moving? Maybe this model of Volvo has the steering wheel in the trunk.
