Cambridge brush fire smudges up the sky

Smoke column

Chris Devers reports thick black smoke; posts the above photo from the 12th floor of Beth Israel Deaconness (where his wife gave birth earlier this week).

Justinide reports it's a large brush fire in Cambridge near BB&N.

The amount of thick dark smoke is lessening.

I thought it was the Fens.

Just rode by there, it appeared to be a small fire in the wooded area on the bank of the river, just south of the Eliot Bridge, on the Cambridge side of the river.

The air is clear once again.

I saw this from the 2fl of the Y in Oak Square... I'm suprised it was that far away.

Must have been fairly large, little bits of ash were falling to the ground in Harvard Square around noon.

Wicked Local Cambridge blog has close-up photos.

That's not a closeup, it isn't even from the same side of the river :-)

Also looks like the Boston Globe got some aerial shots...

I checked to see what the temperature fluctuation was going to look like today when I got up this morning and my iPhone WeatherBug app warned me of 2 weather alerts. They were "Favorable Fire Condition" warnings for the area today...

I blew it off at the time ("psssh, what is this? Florida?") but then lo and behold. Crazy.

I saw the same last night, a fire watch and I assumed they meant for worcester and such

Actually, that was taken from the 12th/top floor of Beth Israel Deaconness hospital, where we just had a son this week :-)

After this, the smoke did seem to die down, and look as if it might be coming from beyond that building -- my vantage point just tricked me into thinking it was coming from there.

I'm now sure it was the same as the brush fire along the Cambridge side of the river that I've seen reports of elsewhere.
