The Boston Business Journal reports the BPDA is telling Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. of New York it wants the $2.1 million the company owes in back taxes and it wants it now. The company, which leases the marketplace from the city, and the BPDA and the mayor have clashed in recent months over what the city says is the company's refusal to help marketplace tenants weather the pandemic.

Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. has a sweetheart deal for leasing Faneuil Hall. They pay next-to-nothing to rent it, charge exorbitant rents to tenants, and have treated local businesses badly. Non-payment of taxes should be grounds for terminating the lease and renting to someplace that will agree to be a better corporate citizen.

This outfit has a substantial real estate portfolio from coast-to-coast. They have two other notable properties in this city. The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel and South Station. It will be interesting to see how this ends.

So they aren't giving their tenants a break on rent, but they're not paying their landlord (the city) the taxes they owe? They can't have it both ways.

Were the lien and the backtaxes just being ignored until now because there was a good relationship? Were they only discovered because of the COVID-19-induced conflict?
