A roving UHub photographer forwarded a photo of the Ronan Park sinkhole today after city crews tried to wrap it off to keep anybody from trying to see just how far down - and where - it goes.

Did you know "details" is a rather vague term... they (cops) receive no training on what they're supposed to do... or how to stay safe when working a "detail". OSHA violation when they're in the worksite without training, hardhat, high-vis vest & on their phones chatting....
It's legalised extortion.

Park was built on an old burial ground, to save money they only moved the headstones. Say, has anyone seen Carol Ann lately?
Oh, now that looks secure.

Capen House Well?

Ronan Park was an 11 acre estate owned by an old Dorchester family.
The city in its munificence bought this in the 1880's to keep it as open space, but also, Mayor Collins lived nearby and may have not wanted development near him (The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same, Right Newton?).
The park is named for Fr. Ronan who started St. Peter's up the street.
It could be the old Capen estate well.

That's always the way. They start taking things away from the city & disadvantaged/minority neighborhoods.
First the streetcar lines.
Then walkable neighborhood schools.
Then our Nike missle silos.

Start filling it with what? It's not a small divot on the golf course, it's seemingly a sinkhole. You don't just throw some dirt into the hole and call it a day.

If it's a former well, there may well be a spring down there that "ate" the previous fill.
There may be an underground river or a water main leaking into the area, and OH, COOL, subsidence.
Once you know what's causing the sinkhole, then you can remediate.
Really, really don't want someone shoveling dirt into it and having it subside again in a couple of months.

Sink holes happen because ... water!
If it is an abandoned well, those also end in ... water!
They need to know what is causing the hole and what is underneath in order to make any fill solution permanent.
