Boston snow emergency goes into effect at 6 p.m., and you know what that means

Mayor Walsh has declared a Boston snow emergency that goes into effect at 6 p.m., so get those cones, broken wicker chairs and other detritus ready to save your parking space.

Most immediately, that means parking is banned on all snow-emergency routes in the city. But after the snow stops, it means anybody who shovels out a space gets to keep it marked off for up to 48 hours after Walsh declares the snow emergency over - except in the South End, where space saving is never legally allowed, no matter how many people do it anyway.

A series of garages across the denser neighborhoods of the city will offer discount parking. The city has a Web page that lists both the garages and designated snow-emergency routes.

Also: Property owners have to clear the sidewalk in front of their property or risk a fine.

In addition to parking issues, the declaration also means that city food-distribution sites - and at leas two Covid-19 testing sites - will be shut tomorrow (more info on testing).

Also canceled: Trash and recycling pickup. Residents with Thursday or Friday pickup will have it delayed a day.

Kids? You'll still have online school, but for a school schedule shortened by 2 1/2 hours. In-person school is canceled for those students who had returned to classes of late, so they'll have to fire up the Chromebooks again.

I am trying the novel approach of using my car as a space saver. Seems like it could work. We’ll see.

You have to move it within 48 hours after the declaration ends ...

I took the added precaution of buying an apartment that comes with its own parking space. You can never be too careful.

I was a Yankees fan, still gloating over Bucky Dent, when I moved from Vermont to Boston in the summer of '79 to go to BU. I lived in a studio apartment on Queensbury Street, about 4 blocks from Fenway. Every time Jim Rice or Fred Lynn hit a homer, which each of them did 39 times that year, I would hear the enormous roar, and jump up to turn on my poky little black-and-white TV to see what had happened. By September I was a Red Sox fan.

I've never understood why some people take "apartment" to mean something you rent. It refers to the physical configuration of the building. You can buy an apartment, just like you can rent a house.

Anyone who moves my snow is getting key'd. You've been warned.

so that it's very clear that it's someone's spot.

It isn't a space saver unless there's a cone.

Someone has already thrown their gauntlet down in Roslindale; a chair’s been out on the street since 9am or so.

Oy.

Acting like immature babies because of a parking spot. Maybe if neighbors worked together to clean the street, it wouldn't happen.

... take people’s minds off the mask wars for a day or two.

Can't find this anywhere on the Boston gov website about snow emergencies "Also canceled: Trash and recycling pickup. Residents with Thursday or Friday pickup will have it delayed a day."

I've received text message and email saying as much.

Trash and Recycling pick up is cancelled citywide on Thursday, December 17. Neighborhoods with a Thursday and Friday pick-up schedule will be delayed by one day. Residents are encouraged to download the Trash Day App.

Just bought a car for the first time in 13 years and am so happy I can park for free tonight!

Thank you, city councilors and Mayor Walsh!
