Update: Roads re-opened, for now, around 3 p.m.

Boston Police announce that several streets in front of or near the State House are being shut, in advance of Wednesday's inauguration in Washington, because of potential threats from fascists.

Beacon Street will be shut between Charles and Tremont streets; Park closed off at Tremont; Bowdoin Street shut between Cambridge and Beacon streets; and Somerset between Cambridge and Beacon streets.

"We will advise when they reopen," police say.

Does that mean “closed to vehicles” or “closed?” What about the people who live on those streets? Are they allowed to leave their houses or to return if away?

Unclear, as always. These alerts from the police and media seem to always be focused on people driving. "seek alternative routes", "traffic", "avoid the area". A mystery for people on foot until you get there and ask in person.

I just posted one of four photos (click on the photographer's name above for the others), looks like, for now, at least, the shutdown just applies to vehicles.

I saw people walking around the barriers at 3, but they were also removing them completely at that time.

Edit: Actually, I did see going around at 2, but I think the idea of a threat seemed significantly diminished at that point.

The photo shows Joy and Mount Vernon Streets.

The road that is blocked is Mount Vernon towards the State House, which is one-way INTO that intersection.

The other three legs of that intersection are all one-way OUT OF the intersection.

So, unless they have temporarily reversed one of the other streets, there is no legal way for a vehicle to approach this intersection. The barriers are blocking the only legal vehicle access.

Meaning that the barriers must be intended to block pedestrians (and bicyclists, skateboarders, etc.).

Has no mention of potential threats from fascists , or anyone else.

The tweet from BPD, no. The notice from the FBI that went out a few days ago, yes.

Can you point to where the FBI refers to "fascists"? I'm surprised they use that label.

Is there a problem?

Compare to recent events, and to historical fascist events, and you might get the point.

Nah, that sort of critical thinking may be beyond your pay grade.

better to be woefully underprepared than to be... wait, what was it again?

And just like that, it's over. For today, I'd assume.

Downtown has been brought to its knees with armored cars and boarded up bars and the dam barbed wire will only get hire and higher. The haters with their twitter and guns ,oh my God what have they done to the town I love so well.
I can only pray for a brand new day in the town I love so well.

Since the protests will be happening on inauguration day, why not just close the statehouse on inauguration day? That's a lot easier than closing down the whole neighborhood.

That makes too much sense to just close the State House on Inauguration Day. Plus, it's not enough security theater. Everything has to be a big, Oscar-worthy production nowadays.

Various terrorist groups were announcing that today was to be a day of armed attack on state capitals.

Read the news now and again. Learn things.

Googling would provide you with the most recent information. As you say, new news every day.

Well then, if the "various terrorist groups" (more likely, 10 people on twitter) mentioned armed protests at statehouses on Sunday, then why not just close the statehouse on Sunday? That's a lot easier than closing down the whole neighborhood.

I’m pretty sure Twitter won’t let you plan an armed takeover over a government building on their platform anymore. More like 10 people in a terrorist cell on the dark web.

Were any MBTA buses used to transport cops to the State House?

up

The yellow buses look like chartered ones from Yankee Line.

Also, they've already pledged not to do so, but unlike the "temporary" suspension of E-Arborway, there are plenty of powerful people keeping track today...

Just keep those streets closed to vehicles permanently. The common would be so much more pleasant. Drivers are ruining America’s oldest park with their noise and air pollution.

"Drivers are ruining America’s oldest park with their noise and air pollution."

Sounds like a comment straight out of the 1970s. Have you been there, oh, I don't know, in the past ten years or so? It's opiate addicts and dealers that are ruining America's oldest park.

You think threats of insurrection are a good thing, right?

Вставай, страна огромная,
Вставай на смертный бой
С фашистской силой тёмною,
С проклятою ордой!

(Arise, great country,
Arise to deadly fight
Against dark fascist force,
Against cursed horde!)
