I think it's well understood at this point that the thousands of people who use this holiday as an excuse to drink all day and dress like leprechauns hale from mutliple ethnic backgrounds.

No one wrote that only Irish and Irish descendants get drunk in Boston on that religious non-holiday. To make that assumption is comparable to assuming that everyone who gets drunk at Mardi Gras in New Orleans are somehow of the same ethnic group.

A clearer way to understand one of Boston's days used to justify a lot of drinking is to consider that the practice of certain days as justification for drinking a lot of alcohol is a practice as American as apple pie.

Not that anyone needs an excuse of a pseudo-holiday to get drunk. But it is more fun to hang on the hook of group celebration the play of getting drunk.

I assure you, everyone who actually has spent time in Boston on St. Patrick's Day is well aware that drunken revelry is not confined to any specific ethnicity.

To be clear, there lots of non-Irish get hammered on St. Patrick's Day. Meanwhile, for the Irish Irish, not so much.

Of course, will WBUR or the Globe be writing stories about Irish restaurants and pubs not seeing the business this year that they've seen in years past due to a certain pandemic as they did for other ethnicities? Save your gripes about ethnic stereotypes for when that doesn't happen.

Maybe some permanent lights that can do different colors? It'd be kinda fun to see green most of the time, switch to various other colors for different holidays or special occasions or white for visibility?
