Alleged second-time drunk driver sends Boston cop to the hospital after slamming into his cruiser on the other side of Columbus Avenue, police say

A Cambridge man was charged with his second OUI early this morning after, police say, he veered onto the other side of Columbus Avenue in Roxbury and slammed into a Boston Police cruiser, sending the officer to the hospital.
Lewis Wallace, 33, was headed south on Columbus Avenue between Dimock and Bragdon street shortly before 1 a.m. when he crashed into a cruiser headed north, police say.
When other officers arrived, the officer in the cruiser was lying on the ground next to his "heavily damaged" cruiser. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police say.
In addition to OUI, Wallace will be charged with negligent operation, police say.

Just like Bernie Madoff went to jail because he stole from rich people, so is this guy going to face consequences because he hit a cop.
The accused is 33
and the max license suspension for a 1st time OUI in Massachusetts is 1 year. If you don't like it, call your state rep, but it is entirely plausible he received the maximum license suspension under the law after his first OUI and was able to reinstate his license afterwards.

The problem isn't the severity of the penalties; it's the low likelihood of actually getting caught. BPD simply doesn't do enough routine traffic enforcement.
That is very true.
But harsher penalties would help. In the Netherlands where people do like to drink, there are far fewer crashes per vehicles on the road. One reason is that irresponsible driving is just not tolerated there. Huge fines! And other sanctions. Especially when the motorist hits a pedestrian or cyclist.
