By adamg on Tue, 08/24/2021 - 9:11am
WBZ reports on the watery crash around 6:30 a.m. Driver hauled out in better shape - by a passing crew team - than the car, which may have first hit a pickup before smashing into the river.

I must have just missed it
That corner gets a lot of pedestrians and cyclists in the morning. It could have been much worse.
Fix Mem Drive
Given relatively low traffic volumes, especially after the pandemic, there's really no need for four lanes on the roadway. Three would be plenty: one in each direction, and a turn lane where needed. This would slow down traffic and reduce the likelihood of bumper cars sending vehicles into the river.
Then, go out and fix the bike paths (which are in horrid shape, despite a sea of new pavement on the roadway), and put in more green space, since, you know, this is a park.
Amen Ari
The bike path along Memorial Drive between the Cambridge boat house and the BU boat house is horrible. If it’s early enough, many cyclists take the newly paved roadway instead.

Our illustrious traffic
Our illustrious traffic planners ran simulations showing that various 4-lane roads like the BU Bridge and Mass Ave through MIT could be narrowed to 3 lanes without causing problems.
The results have been awful. Way worse traffic jams than used to exist, for more hours of the day. The 47 and 1 buses have not recovered.
It's especially ironic for the 1 through MIT since the project included a bus lane in the southbound direction. Despite the supposed priority for buses, southbound buses actually got slower. And northbound buses got way slower.
This.
