Neva mind pahking, Hahvahd now bans public completely from Yahd afta 5 p.m., at least through Oct. 11

The Crimson reports Harvard has shut its eponymous Yard to the public between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. through Oct. 11, partly for Covid-19 concerns, but more to provide some respite for the tender Harvard freshmen who live on the Yard.
The ban on non-Harvard students in those hours even applies to parents - the Crimson quotes one frosh who came back from a Target run with her parents only to learn they couldn't come up to her dorm with her, forcing to carry all of her purchases to her room by herself.

They don't ban grad students.
They don't ban grad students. Anyone with a Harvard ID can go in. The grad student quoted in the article seems to be inconvenienced by the smaller number of gates, and didn't say they couldn't go in at all.
I'm surprised they don't allow accompanied guests. Maybe the policy was supposed to allow guests but nobody told the guards.
It would help if they bothered to post the details online. All they say at https://www.harvard.edu/visit/ is "Harvard Yard closures: Evening closures (5 p.m. to 3 a.m.): Aug. 20 through Oct. 11", without even mentioning which gates are open or closed.
It must be really frustrating for a wheelchair user that the only gate on the Quincy Street side is up a flight of stairs from the rest of the Yard. Normally at night several other barrier-free gates are open.
Thanks for the correction
I've deleted the part about grad students even though, agreed, they still sound whiny.
And thanks for mentioning people with mobility issues - that's a lot more important than some abled grad student who has to walk a couple more minutes.
I don't think the grad
I don't think the grad student sounds whiny. She says it's a longer walk, and that it's confusing where to go. I agree with both statements. It is confusing for gates that are normally open 24/7 to suddenly be closed with very little publicity.
Occupy Harvard
I assumed they never really reopened to the public after the whole "occupy" thing years ago when Harvard preemptively closed the gates least any smelly outsiders manage to camp out on their lawn.
I use the pedestrian plaza over Cambridge St as a nice cut-through. Hopefully that stays open to illegals like myself.
The good news
is they end the prohibition at 3AM for some reason, so you can still go in and make some noise before the sun comes up
They did open up after the
They did open up after the Occupy occupation.
The Cambridge Street overpass is supposed to be a public walkway. Sometimes Harvard has blocked off some of the sidewalks when holding important events in the tent, but they're not supposed to.
In the name of historical accuracy
I seem to recall that a band of occupiers DID set up a camp in the yard, back in the day. Harvard set up ID checks at all the gates to keep non-Harvard people out. I remember this because I was a guest-speaker and had to be signed in by my host.
On a side note
I got to park my car in Harvard Yard a few months ago. Frankly it was not as exciting as I had been led to believe.

Harvard Yard
So if that rule doesn't get lifted, can that private property be taxed?
I think Harvard has to close the Yard from time to time
I have a vague recollection that there's some law to the effect that if you allow the public free access to your property, after a while it becomes a public thoroughfare by default, so they have to close the Yard from time to time to keep that from happening.
But I don't remember where I heard that, and it may be wrong.

Sounds about right
I remember my dad saying something similar to explain why they annually shut down one entrance road leading to the bus garage at my old high school.
They already closed it every
They already closed it every year for Commencement and Head of the Charles. The latter because of some kind of riot or really good party in the 80s which nobody even remembers.
I don't think so
I've been on campus for decades & that doesn't seem to be the case. They close the yard for events (commencement, big wig visits), Occupy, pandemic, etc.
Reminds me of the former Pru owners
Using 9/11 as an excuse to shut down the observatory floor. What better way to keep out the riff-raff.
do you mean the former Hancock Tower?
The Prudential Skywalk remained open after 9/11. (Maybe it closed for a few days, but not for very long.) It's closed now for redevelopment, though, along with Top of the Hub restaurant, and should reopen in 2023.
You spelled it wrong
It's not Hahvahd, it's Haavid.
