Some useful options that nobody interviewed in the article seems to have tried are politely saying "sorry, no, have a nice night" or giving him the three (3) dollars he asked about.

The only people allowed to knock on my door that late are those I'm expecting and those needing help in an emergency. Going door to door at that hour merits responses commensurate with the rudeness of doing so.
