I have to say I am a little impressed he just came out and owned it, unlike so many of the Trumpanzees who supported the guy because he "tells it like it is," then when called out for that they say "what he really meant was..." and twisting themselves into pretzels trying to justify the very crap they admire him for without coming out and just saying they agree with it.
But candor or not, this guy is still a piece of shit.
It makes sense though
Ever since the civil rights movement, most racists have understood that they have to couch their racism in more "politically correct" terminology (cf. Lee Atwater). But now we're seven years into a political cycle that has brought a much more blatant, open style of racist rhetoric into the Republican Party and the right wing in general. It's not surprising that some younger people "didn't get the memo" that you're supposed to think racism is bad. They've been consuming non-stop racism for the last seven years, so is it surprising that some of them don't know the correct code words to use?

Speaking as a clinician, sure, we can discuss all people in terms of their mental wellness, and I would absolutely agree that someone who can't take the perspective of others, recognize their privilege, and control their impulses to say awful things does have some deficits. I do think that someone engaging in bigotry is objectively lacking a number of personal skills.
But I think it's generally not a good idea to just cry "mental illness" when someone engages in bigotry or other harm to others, because most people with diagnosed and persistent psychiatric disabilities don't engage in bigotry, and aren't harming anyone, and we run the risk of it becoming a slur that means "someone who does something that bothers us."

i think you're right that it's a choice, though I think you contradict that by referring to the apple and the tree, which suggest that it's not chosen, but inherited.
Racism is growing in the USA, not because some old bad ideas have regained credibility, but because because there's a certain cultural faction that has decided that it's cool to be racist. Jerkwads like Netzer embrace racism because it's the jerkwad thing to do. Trump is not admired by his cohort in spite of his being a chiseler, a cheat, a racist, a con, a sexual predator, and so on; he's admired because he is those things. It all fits together; it's an ideology of assholery. Being every kind of asshole is a lifestyle choice, and racism is an essential part of it.

Lots of lifestyle rednecks
People who grew up in comfortable suburbs who never had to hunt/fish for their supper or do manual labor driving big shiny trucks and buying shiny guns because "they're country". Racism level varies - sometimes oddly specific - but it is all toxic cosplay, really.
Those of us who grew up in rural trailer parks find them mostly amusing. So do my somewhat retrograde cousins who still work physical jobs in rural forests and mills. But they are more concerned about these people invading their rural areas and pushing up real estate prices with their "I'm a rural guy" mentality and ridiculous lincoln log mc mansions.

As has been explained by many people smarter than I: Racists have found their voice and are encouraged by the open success of others who think like they do. All their lives they've been told to keep all that quiet and now they think they don't have to (they are part of a movement of Great American Heroes, you see). It's not that previously benign people are taking to racism like "because its trending".

People who have racist ideas are expressing their ideas more than they might have otherwise previously. Part of that is seeing others of importance doing so and part of it is to fit in with their in-crowd that are all doing it (the "lifestyle racist" being discussed).
But I think in part, there's also a tendency for those holding these racist beliefs to have been given freedom to express these ideas because they're "not racist". They've built a sliding scale of racism and they see themselves as being on the "okay" side of the line. For them, it's okay to say "Asians are better at math" or "A black person being lazy makes sense" because they don't want to lynch the black person, like a racist would. So, they're not racists because they're not in the Klan and hoping to kill black people...they just know why that black person doesn't have a job...it's his laziness. That's not racist to them.
At the same time, there's a small faction of society that's deemed *everything* racist. More often than not, they're right. I'm not trying to both-sides the discussion. However, not every person making a description of race or observation is racist and not every person willing or able to attribute systemic racism to a particular ill in society is themselves a racist as a result. A small company that has only hired white people is not necessarily racist. For this group of people, everything is racist and the sliding scale doesn't exist because if it's on the scale at all, it's racist.
And thus we have the conflict. Some people see a sliding scale, which excuses their comments/behaviors, that doesn't exist. Some people see racists everywhere, even when it may just be someone naïve of their privilege. Each group worries the other group is going to "win" the argument.
