Man charged with murdering mother in her Roxbury apartment; arraigned in hospital bed after allegedly trying but failing to kill himself

Najee Herbert, 23, was arraigned in a hospital bed today on charges he stabbed his mother to death in her apartment at Roxse Homes sometime before Tuesday morning, when a relative found her body, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
According to the DA's office, a relative of Donna Lamb, 58, grew alarmed after being unable to reach her by phone for several days. When the relative knocked on her door, "Herbert answered the door to the apartment and made statements that he had stabbed the victim."
At Herbert's arraignment in a room at Boston Medical Center, Judge David Weingarten ordered Herbert held without bail - and that he be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation, once doctors say he has recovered enough from his self-inflicted injuries for the trip.

There has been a shift recently to move from "domestic violence" to "intimate partner violence," as IPV doesn't require people to cohabitate but does require the context of a romantic relationship, and is characterized by control, fear, and a power imbalance, not simply the presence of violence.
This is mostly a good thing, but I've been finding that some programs that used to have "domestic violence" as an eligibility criterion have now changed it to IPV, and we aren't able to apply that to non-intimate-partner situations where we once would have, such as situations where a parent is controlling the finances and movement of a grown child, or vice versa, or a young adult is being threatened with forced marriage/forced emigration. "Domestic violence" did originally encompass any sort of assault, breaking things, etc. within a household.
Condolences to all who knew them. Two lives ruined in an instant for who knows what reason.
