Crappy old PlayStation forces evacuation of Terminal A at Logan

WBZ reports the PlayStation, in somebody's luggage, was in such bad shape it just looked weird on an X-ray and, being better safe than sorry, State Police ordered the terminal evacuated this afternoon.

I wonder if it was a PlayStation 4 that has a very bomb-like x-ray silhouette. You can almost see the C4 ready to blow.

that looks like an x-ray image of a computer, which is what a PlayStation 4 is. Fans, heat sink blades, circuit boards... just a computer.

could explode into deadly shrapnel at any second!

Or uh... possibly just wear out its bearing and stop spinning. But you know, also the other thing.

I'm sure it had wires and maybe even a battery!

still around? Or did recalls get all of them?

Exactly how does a PlayStation degrade with age that it looks like a bomb?

I bought a Super Nintendo in Oregon after visiting a video game thrift shop. Put it in my carry on so it would be safe.

I got pulled out of line and they swabbed it for bomb materials. I was like, it’s a SNES!

They swabbed the baby formula container, which makes total sense.

Mistaking a Playstation for a bomb seems weird, but the process must be mostly automated so if the system flags it they need to follow procedure. Just guessing here.

Well at least they didn't shut down the whole city like they did with the infamous Boston Mooninite Panic of 2007.

Were these old game systems built at a repurposed radium-watch factory or something?

Are poisoned with imbeciles and sociopaths.

Every single one.

I mean, in the context of this story.

This occurrence is the "bridge too far" for you? TSA exercising caution? Around an event that has had not just a bomb threat but an actual bomb in the recent past? Just after a mass shooting ON THE SUBWAY in NYC?

I don't disagree with the statement per se, but I think your ire at imbeciles and sociopaths might better go towards...hrm...I dunno...people who actually have power and are using it to hurt others, rather than some guy on a security screening detail who was a little cautious, and managed to cause a few delays to people traveling by air.

And hell, clearing this bomb threat in LESS THAN AN HOUR seems to me a model of efficiency when it comes to our public servants. And I say this as a person who probably thinks that the Staties probably waited until they finished their DDs before showing up.

Staties, etc. grossly overreacted to this, I have one word.

Lockerbie.

In case people have forgotten, or are too young to remember, that’s where a 747 was brought down - killing all on board - when someone decided to turn a stereo receiver into a bomb. It went undetected and was loaded onto the plane because people figured it was just a stereo receiver.

An appropriate reaction would be investigating the unknown object. A gross overreaction would be evacuating everyone from Terminal A.

If you believe the suspicion was reasonable and their investigatory response was reasonable, then had it been an explosive device that detonated upon physical inspection, how would you justify civilian casualties that could have been avoided by evacuating the area?

Exactly.
Also, the nice, wide-open, people-flow design of the modern terminals at Logan (which is nice in many respects) might be a slight drawback in this case.
- You can't isolate parts of the check-in hall from each other, so yeah, everybody has to be moved outside in case it's something airborne.
- Everyone is funneled to one central security corridor, so if the concern was raised at an x-ray there for a carry-on (the short article wasn't clear), you've got to keep everyone away from the possible threat. It's not as if there are two security corridors at opposite ends of the building, where you could shut down & isolate one while channeling everyone to the other end.
- Even if the x-ray concern was at some point of the checked-baggage path, you don't know (well, I sure don't...) how close to the same people paths it runs underfoot or behind walls

That's the thought process behind the Mooninite panic. You imagine a James Bond / Mission Impossible / Batman villain, and come up with elaborate ways to outsmart them.

Was shoe removal.

I'm not afraid enough to die to have someone's plans inconvenienced over a (expletive) gaming console, and I actually like my life right now.

The airline/airpory bullshit lately takes all the fun and freedom from worry away. And gasoline prices aren't worth road trips if you're on a strict budget. Time to get out and take an urban parks staycation. Get out and appreciate Franklin Park, Arboretum, ponds and lakes all within walking distance.

"Lately"???

Have you been paying attention the last 45 or 50 years?

I didn't have a fight picked with me by some poor wage slave of the state over a water bottle.
