Husband had an appointment at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital today so must be a healthcare thing?

My understanding is that they will make it a holiday next year -- apparently they have to do union negotiations and stuff to change the calendar.

I know a bunch of people who had the proceeding Friday off but are working today. Their employer declared it was a corporate holiday before it was an official federal/state holiday and picked Friday as the day off instead of Monday.

The corporation didn't want to change their internal date due to scheduling reasons to match the government holiday.

BU had scheduled the day off for the 17th. Starting next year they will observe the federal holiday.

We are taught to use “an” before a vowel but I think because when pronouncing M you say it as “em” it flows better

when they were owned by MCA in the 1970s. Their banner used to say "Universal An MCA Company."

a mass general...
an MGH...

it's about the sound (EM), not the actual letter (M)

White folks should be forced to work on this holiday. Just saying...

Who are you looking to bait with these comments?

they should be forced to work from 8:00 - 4:45; then, at the last :15 minutes of the day, their manager should go to their office and tell them they had the whole day off all along.

They should tell the staff it's a holiday first thing in the morning, then have their managers forbid them from leaving. Then eventually send in the national guard and force the managers to release them.

(It's not accurate that enslaved Black folks had no idea for two years that the Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect. People have perpetuated this white savior narrative that them ignorant Black people had no understanding of what was going on in the world and didn't have any connections with free Black folks or allies. Slave narratives are full of accounts of people who secretly read and wrote, and people who worked their way up to being able to run errands to local commerce areas where they looked and listened and figured out what was what, then shared it among enslaved folks. What actually happened was the enslavers refused for two years to give up human beings as property, and they had to be compelled by military force.

My office didn’t shut down. How many of ya’ll slack jawed slackers just went to the beach and didn’t give a rats patooty about what Juneteenth is about and why not ask how much state and federal money did we waste in payroll dollars. In my experience your average state salaries worker is a slacker.

Wah wah wah

Instead of complaining that others get the day off you should be advocating for yourself. What's wrong with people spending time with friends and family or enjoying freedom? I think we should have at least one federal holiday a month. We all deserve some time away from the grind.

Before you ask I do work in the public sector AND I was at a Juneteenth event.

Glad to see you got a holiday for June, now you just need one for August. It’s a hard slog for state worked to go a full month without a Monday off. Oh wait. That’s when they take vacations or use up the personal days.

It's summer. It's New England. People want to take time off. Why does this anger you so?

up

Exactly! So much hate wow

For the record I always take a personal day in August for my birthday

There should be at least one holiday every month, if not more. Also everyone should get these days off (or a corresponding free PTO day they can use another time if they have to work).

Now your complaining about people using earned time off? How dare they!

This here privately employed person had a paid holiday today, and is taking the next two off as paid vacation days.

Exactly. Most of my career was in the private sector and that's when I had my most freedom... Working for an agency everything is laid out, there's rules and more expectations. The private company I worked for gave us a bank of days for vacation, holidays, personal days and said use em when you want. I have friends with unlimited leave who work from home who work in the private sector. It's possible and many employers will give lots of time off. Clearly some of these people work for companies that could benefit from a union or something if they are bent out of shape by someone else taking a day off every so often.

Unless you have senority you are not getting your preferred days off if there’s decent demand.

That third verse is a doozy.

And used it to pay reparations.

I suggest my fellow white folks do the same. Let Black folks have one day out of the year free of white nonsense.

How much did you pay in reparations?
