Man threatens to bean T bus driver for driving too slow

Transit Police report arresting a Somerville man after he allegedly threatened a T bus driver with a five-pound wooden block for not going fast enough for his tastes.

Police say Wakell Steele, 22, of Somerville, got on a bus in Davis Square like a normal person shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Friday but that he exploded in indignant anger a few minutes later on Highland Avenue near Benton Road:

As the operator was traveling along the route Steele activated the stop request signal. The operator/victim pulled over at the next available stop. At this time Steele approached the victim and demanded his money back accusing the victim of "F***ING driving to slowly". At this time Steele quickly picked up a chock block located near the storage compartment of the front of the bus. A chock block is a large block of wood weighing approximately 5 pounds. The block is used to secure the tires when the bus is not in use. Steele now armed with the chock block took an aggressive stance and again demanded he be refunded his bus fare repeating the victim drove to slowly. The victim was in fear of being struck.

The victim got out from his seat and exited the bus pushing past Steele. The victim pointed out Steele to officers who was now walking towards Central Street. Officers caught up to him and attempted to engage him in conversation. Steele responded by challenging the officers to remove their duty belts essentially opining officers are only "tough" with their guns on.

Steele was arrested on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Officers then gave him a ride to TPD headquarters on Southampton Street in Boston; police did not say if they drove him there quickly.

Innocent, etc.

And get rid of one of our two cars so now I take the T ..... I hate the T.
Every day it's something, delays, pervs, criminals... last week the charlie card machine at Shawmut was not working and there wasn't a T employee in the station. Good Job MBTA.

They cut the commuter bus from my area, the trains are crowded now, and I'd have to figure out how to walk to/from North Station with Congress Street shut and the Orange Line closings.

So biking it is! But I'm set up for commuting that way because I've been doing it for decades now. If you are able, this is a good time to test it out. One reason I started was that transit times were too variable, while biking time varied very little.

If you are interested, here's some resources.

But I'm not up for biking down Dot ave to downtown in 90 degree heat and getting to the office all hot and sweaty.
If it was a few minutes it would make sense for me.

What job do you do in an office in 2022 that you can't do over the Internet, if I may ask?

Do you really think the only thing working people do all day is type and click?

I've got news for you friend, "work" isn't limited to thing that are done at a desk. Lots of us -- probably a majority of us -- are professionals that do something physical that can't be done at home and needs to be done in person, often around tools and people that aren't in one's kitchen.

And getting to it? Takes longer than just riding in.

We are also seeing another COVID wave forming - no reason to mess with enclosed spaces when biking is faster.

Its Bikes all the time. (no not a bad thing).

She (used to) ride in snow. I think that says about how far you are going to get with her in trying to change her mind. (you wont). It takes a special kind of dedicated person to want to / willingly ride a bike in snow.

I've been riding year-round in Boston for the past 20+ years. You don't need to be dedicated, you just need to want to get where you're going quickly and cheaply. Boston is an easy city to commute via bike and it has been for a long time even without dedicated bike lanes. There is really no faster way around town. Riding a bike is what you do when you're too lazy to spend twice as long on the T or drive around looking for parking.

I'm critical of people who blow off any attempts of cycling in the city. I know there are people who have disabilities, etc that preclude them from cycling. But it's not as impossible as most people initially think. You don't need to in particularly good shape and you don't need to be a daredevil. You just need a working bike. And it need not be an E-bike either.

As for being sweaty getting to work, I'm no more sweaty riding a bike then I am taking the T when it's hot. And when it matters I ride to work in a T-Shirt & shorts and change into a nicer clothes when I get to the office.

It's been nice to see how well Hubway/BlueBikes has been adopted by people. I see them everywhere and used by every type of rider. It's proof you don't need anything special.

Dedicated is exactly what it sounds like to me.

You're dedicated to your mode, you make it work for you.

No, not being snarky. Its dedication to a mode.

I get the same for not owning a car. I have the $ to buy a car. I have the means to get a car loan. I can very comfortably afford one. But I don't have one. People look at me like I have six heads and how.. OMG HOW CAN I LIVE without a car?!?!?

dedication to a mode is why.

You walk to the walk AND talk the talk.. or you can sit the f*ck down.. as I like to say. Both swirls (and you) do it.

I hope the cop who wrote up that report isn’t collecting the bonus money for a higher education degree.
