Where you can sign a condolence book for the queen might surprise you

If you want to pen your condolences, you should head over to Old North Church - yes, the place with the lanterns and all - starting Monday. The British consulate announced:

The British Consulate in Boston is opening a condolence book for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Old North Church in Boston (193 Salem Street). It will open on Monday 12 September and stay open through Wednesday 14 September from 10am to 4pm.

What are you trying to say here? Are you a pro unified Ireland Falkland islander? I’m confused

I wonder if they have a rationale for this that makes any sense. Were they trying to be ironic? Was the USS Constitution not available?

There are plenty of places they could have used that wouldn't be nearly as weird.

I guess a few hundred years will gloss over a lot of hurt feelings.

I doubt this is the reason, but the Anglican Old North Church is a useful symbol of shared heritage. The congregation was balanced in its Loyalist and Patriot membership. Rev. Byles was a staunch Loyalist and resigned as rector of Christ Church (as it was called) the same day of Paul Revere's ride.

Furthermore, the infamous John Pitcairn's tomb is at Old North. Pitcairn commanded the advance on Lexington & Concord and died from wounds suffered at Bunker Hill—he died a loyal subject and hero of the cause. His remains were said to be returned to England, but the remains of several British soldiers killed at Bunker Hill remain entombed at Old North.

On the one hand I'm spitballing and could be reading too much into the symbolism. On the other, I can see Old North as a nexus where both the British empire and United States heritage are both symbolically well represented.

One of the titles of the Monarch of England is Defender of the Faith. That is the Anglican Church / Church of England / Church of Ireland (Disestablished as the result of Disestabablishmentarianism which defeated Anti-Disestablishmentarianism in the 1870's) / Church of Scotland / The Anglican Church in Canada / The Episcopal Church, etc.

You know, the one where the king started his own church because his sperm could not knock out a male heir.

Old North is still a very functioning Episcopal Church and in theory King Charles (I have to stop from laughing) is head of that church. That could be the reason why.

Besides, you are going to get a lot more tourists walking through the North End than you would Kendall Square. Remember, the Big Smoke thrives on tourists just as much as Boston.

Why did they call it Anti-Disestablishmentarianism?

They should have called it Disdisestablishmentarianism.

The opposition to the disestablishment called their cause Anti-Disestablishmentarianism.

I was not present is Disraeli's cabinet at the time, so I can't speak for them.

It was a way to fight off the Irish breaking away. It bought the exploiters a few more decades until the Catholic Church assumed absolute power over the Republic from 1922 until about November 2015 (same sex marriage passed by referendum), abortion legalized 2018 though many consider the first episode of Fr. Ted in 1995 to be the Lexington / Concord to start the revolution with The Magdalene Sisters in 2002 being the Saratoga.
