Adam Castiglioni attended the official re-opening of City Hall Plaza, which features $95 million in "kinder brutalism," including a new playground with what might be the longest slide in the city.
Matt Conti also posted photos of the revamped plaza.

That's why I wonder if a full grown overweight adult could even fit on it. Nice slide though.

Magoo went to plaza last night it tried the slide. It was super fun-tastic yippee inducing slide! This fun-fun time cause Magoo to reminisce about Magoo’s childhood which then caused Magoo to think of Magoo’s first smoochie, which then caused Magoo to think of Magoo’s first boing-boing. Magoo.

For some reason I am reminded of the heat retaining turtle that burned so many children.

The slide made me parse "kinder" as German for "children," perhaps where they're introduced to minimalist design and scheiß architektur.

That's how I read it too, although I thought it was a pun on kindergarten.

Cross the street to be their true alpha selves, they're gonna find out this park is more dangerous than the Bell and Hand (which offers a high probability of getting stabbed, getting into a fight, or just dying in a bathroom stall to be found the next day).

Rebuilt under structure that won't collapse due to an old covered-over fountain that leaked into everything, drainage, and tons of other structural stuff that you don't see.

Do you guys do anything else but complain and take shots at each other? I know we're cynical but Jesus this it's a cynic jamboree around here lately.

Random thought as I walked

Random thought as I walked through the plaza early this PM on my way back from Haymarket, looking like a pack mule loaded with $18 worth of discounted fruits and vegetables. It's a nice park, lots of family having a good time at the playground. But that $95MM price tag? Wow! In parts of the country (not MA) that's enough to build a full mid-size high school.
Underground infrastructure

A big chunk of that price tag went to repairing underground infrastructure -- multiple tunnels, including Green and Orange Lines pass underneath, along with a few other non-public tunnels. There is a lot below the surface that added to the cost, rather than it simply being a case of overpaying for some playground equipment.

The basically rebuilt the tops of the tunnels and sealer/water proofed them which includes the excavation and reburying. It was kind of cool seeing the Green Line tunnels open to the air.

Given how much trouble below the surface work was, one hoped they would do something substantial above.
