Ashland gynecologist charged with punching cop in the head during failed Capitol coup

From FBI affidavit

Starer punching a DC cop in the Capitol, photo via FBI.

Dr. Jacquelyn Starer, an Ashland gynecologist and addiction-recovery specialist affiliated with Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, was arrested today on charges she didn't just enter the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attempted putsch, she punched a Washington cop in the left side of her head.

Starer, 68, is scheduled for an initial appearance in US District Court in Boston this afternoon on charges of forcibly assaulting and impeding federal officers, civil disorder, knowingly engaging in physical violence in a restricted building and engaging in physical violence in a Capitol building.

In an affidavit, based in part on an interview with a Metropolitan police officer and images from her body-worn camera, an FBI agent describes how Starer went on the attack once inside the Capitol:

The body-worn camera footage records STARER approach MPD officers and make contact with an MPD officer at approximately 2:59 p.m. Images ... depict STARER striking an MPD Officer at approximately 2:59 p.m.

Law enforcement identified the officer in question as Officer M.B., who was interviewed regarding the events of January 6, 2021. Officer M.B. is an MPD Officer who responded to the Capitol during the riot. Officer M.B. stated that a blonde woman wearing a red jacket and hat punched her in the left side of her head. According to Officer M.B., her Sergeant pulled her back to check on her, Officer M.B. told the Sergeant she had been punched by the woman, and the Sergeant told her to return to the line. Officer M.B. stated that the blonde woman came at her again, and Officer M.B. struck the woman in response. During her interview, Officer M.B. recognized the blonde woman who hit her at timestamp 14:59:28 in footage taken from her body-worn camera.

Based on your affiant’s review of open-source video and images, the crowd became more agitated and a physical altercation between rioters and officers ensued as the officers attempted to restrict the rioters from passing through the archway entrance to the area behind them. STARER appears to have been affected by the chemical irritant that was deployed during the altercation.

According to the affidavit, Starer came under investigation just five days after the failed coup when a tipster dropped a dime on her.

Tipster-1 stated they were aware prior to the events of January 6, 2021 that STARER planned to attend a march on the Capitol. According to Tipster-1, prior to January 6, 2021, STARER bragged to a mutual acquaintance that she "was prepared" for it, with a mesh knife-proof shirt and bottles of pepper spray.

An FBI review of open-source and published photos quickly led them to identify Starer outside the Capitol and then entering it in an attempt to forcibly keep the former president in office.

I honestly didn't believe so many people could still take President Donald J Trump seriously after all his lies and closed door meetings with Anti-Democratic dictators while President.

Vladimir Putin almost cracked a smile on January 6th when he saw the affect Trump had on American democracy and the division he caused in our nation

Dr. Starer needs to come to terms with the fact she joined a traitorous and treasonous mob at the behest of a Russian useful idiot. She needs to serve some time.

The fact that she is a gyno & supports the party that doesn't think women shouldn't make their own health care choices and are deniers of science. WTF?

I feel terrible for her patients.

She's 68. I'm guessing her parents are unaware of whats going on in one way or another.

I'm 70. My 94 year old father would be pretty ticked if I pulled a stunt like this.

...it does seem like there are a fair number of "what a shame about him/her" types among the insurrectionists: people who had opportunity and who looked like they might make something of themselves at some point, but they just squandered what they had.

Dr. Starer is a hypocrite who forgot her Hippocratic oath. What happened to "first do no harm"?

should be revoked or at least suspended. She has done deliberate harm to another person. She is a disgrace and an embarrassment to her profession.

Analysis by U of Chicago academic of riot participants: https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2022/01/03/jan-6-rioters-white-older

Plenty of other medical professionals were at the Capitol, including Dr. Simone Gold, who spoke at the Stop the Steal Rally on Jan 5, was sentenced to 60 days in jail this summer for her actions on the 6th. Gold founded America’s Frontline Doctors, a big proponent of Covid and vaccine misinformation.

I'm curious how many insurrectionists truly regret their actions and buying into the cult.

And how many are mostly remorseful they didn't go further and complete what they had started.

I think they still believe they are brave martyrs but they don't like the inconvenience of the whole situation and blame everyone but themselves.

Many were so drunk on the feedback from their online echo chambers they assumed they'd be considered heroes. They quickly found their online friends didn't represent the masses and weren't actually going to give support where it matters. (Legally and monetarily.)

Hopefully the cold reality of serious criminal charges has snapped them out of their QAnon/MAGA dreamworld.

But perhaps I'm the delusional one.

Mob psychology in its bloom. I doubt if she would hit a cop when on her own. But being in a group that turns into a mob, she - and I imagine everyone else who attempted the coup - surrendered control of her decision making. The spirit of the mob possessed her. By joining this crowd her higher order thinking shut down. Her thinking was done for her by the mob she helped make up.

The same mentality that possessed people during the Salem Witch Trials. The same spirit that prevailed during the McCarthy terror campaigns against non-conformers.

Starer has been on the FBI’s radar since at least Jan. 11, 2021, when, according to the affidavit, a tipster submitted an online tip regarding Starer.

“According to Tipster-1, prior to Jan. 6, 2021, STARER bragged to a mutual acquaintance that she ‘was prepared’ for it, with a mesh knife-proof shirt and bottles of pepper spray,” the affidavit says.

Extending this idea of mob mentality.

How do dictators manage to win and control large groups? How do they manage to maintain strangle holds over military? Pinochet in Chile, Putin in Russia, Mao, and of course the dictator of all time (Godwin's rule forbids my mention his name)?

Sovereign nationalists are nothing new in the US. I'm thinking beyond the KKK. There have been America Firsters, smaller groups that pretend exist outside the political norm and the many today. I suggest that all of them are composed of people who want to give over their independent thinking to a kind of mob brain. Even in religious cults there is a mob mentality that functions and controls.

What ties Trump to dictators of the past is an innate understanding of mob psychology. He is a buffoon and idiot in many ways; but where mob psychology is concerned he is brilliant.

Taking this as a premise then to me there are questions such as are mob mentality groups inevitable? Or are the symptoms of the body politic or mental health? In either case if they are symptoms then diagnosing the illnesses and creating treatments are very much needed right now.

None of these idiots get a pass b/c they can't make a critical decision. They were "caught up in it" so hard they didn't know what they were doing? Nope - hard pass on that one. Stupid is as stupid does.

...as were the hearings of the McCarthy era. This was not an official action of any organ of government, but a riot, fueled by right-wing media outlets and a con artist in the White House.

I say: shut 'em down and lock 'em up. Let 'em all break rocks in the Aleutians for a few years.
