Investors who buy up dives and their buildings buy the old Jacob Wirth building
Two investors who are part of a group that has bought up a number of Boston-area dives and their buildings in recent years today bought the building that houses the shuttered Jacob Wirth restaurant on Stuart Street for $5.27 million, according to Suffolk County Registry of Deeds records.
The records show that Anthony Simboli of Rowley sold the historic building to City Realty managing partner Fred Starikov and Julius Sokol. Both are investors in the Greater Boston Bar Co., which started buying bars in 2018 - some of which it has since resold.
In 2021, under his own name, Sokol won licensing-board approval to re-open Jacob Wirth, using a liquor license he bought from the owners of the former Daisy Buchanan's on Newbury Street.
At a licensing-board hearing, Sokol said he planned to re-open Jacob Wirth pretty much as it was before it closed following a 2018 fire - after some 150 years of serving German food and beer.
Sokol's proposal was the third for the shuttered landmark. Plans to remake it as a sports bar and gut it to become a marijuana dispensary both failed.

I hope it happens.
You can stick a sports bar in any building at any time, but you can't replace 150 years of history.
Pity Cummings Properties didn't put their name on it
Wirth Cummings has a nice ring to it.
That area will be Wirthless.

Oh, I don't think so
Resurrecting it in its original theme is a Wirthwhile goal.

That stretch is so old and neglected.
The youth hostel helps.
Because it’s quiet and still interesting. Not lined with glaring glass. I enjoy walking or riding this stretch.
I'm just glad I got a chance
I'm just glad I got a chance to lift a stein at this Downtown Boston landmark before it shutdown or gets renovated. That Old-Timey vibe was AWESOME!
Strong agree. I was never a
Strong agree. I was never a regular but I have a few fond memories of sitting there with a glass full of beer and a head full of daydreams.
Miss Jake Worth's
Back in the 70's it wasn't just an "old-timey vibe", it was genuinely old time: sawdust on the floor, waiters with aprons, Jacob Wirth's Special Dark on draft, and no weisswurst after 12:00 sharp.
Weisswurst?
Why no weisswurst after noon? Have I been committing some cardinal sin?
sigh
I miss the food every time I pass by. The frontage looks sadder by the day
victim of a bitter divorce
Jake's did a pretty good business - the problem was not sales volume.
I read a piece by the family's son. He loved managing the place.
A divorce which was obviously bitter forced the sale of the business.
Hopeful the new owners finally make it happen.
