The Swellesley Report reports the town recreation commission has scheduled a hearing on complaints from residents near some town sportsball courts that pickleball is just too darn loud.
I read a WSJ article about it. Apparently the gear used does create some loud thwacks. There’s alternatives that aren’t as loud but the purist pickballers hesitate to use it.
Just another situation where both sides should compromise and work together.
I walk my dogs by these courts. Pickleball is LOUD because you are kind of hitting a wiffleball with a ping pong paddle (sorta; no offense to those who play). The problem is that the courts are 15 yards from some condos. When the weather is good, it is a constant stream for players thwack thwack thwack all day. Yay! for being active but Wellesley has other courts in town that they could easily move pickleball to.
Super easy to make fun of this but noise pollution is not a joke.
It sounds like the popping noise is really loud. I could see it being a problem at any time of day.
The best solution would be for the town to build some dedicated pickle all courts not near any homes. This would also solve the problem of tennis court availability since it would restore these pickle ball courts to tennis use.

This is a country wide phenomenon

DEEP breaths, Matt.
We survived Racquetball in th 80's, pretty confident we'll survive this too.
That shit was played indoors
That shit was played indoors tho
Not in my neighborhood
We'd play fake racquetball against a school house wall in Dorchester. Well, until they turned the school into a Walgreen's anyway.
It was really cool because steps served as one wall and you really never had any idea where the ball would go when it bounced off the steps.
Thankfully, it's not life or death
Seems like a valid concern along with possible solutions that don't involve banning the game outright. Win-Win.
Too darn loud!

Are there time restrictions on use of these courts?
If not, maybe there should be, such as not after 11 pm?
