It was abandoned for years with broken glass and the building open to the elements.

At least that's what we started calling the one in Brighton after several trips in the wee hours to get something found the doors locked with a sign saying that they were closed for 30 minutes.

I hate to see neighborhoods lose retail options, particularly grocery and pharmacies. Let’s hope we can arrest the slide of departing businesses.

If the one in Peabody Square became a three-story residential development site....
...just like it was from about 1890 until 1925 when the present building was built.

Not exactly shedding tears, here.
These 7-11 stores around here (some of them, at least) took over from good smaller chains like Tedeschi or Richdale or others.
For that matter, I remember (cue Jerry Trupiano wayback machine) when 7-11 was a decent store. Recent incarnations (recent decades) have been faint comparison.

You don't have to go back in time, just go to Europe. Some of the best 7-11's I've ever been have been in Europe. So clean, fresh baked goods and hand made chocolates brought in every day. Stores are clean, bright, and fresh. And the stuff isn't over priced.
Far cry from some of the 7-11's I've been in around here. Dark, old, dank, dirty, gross. Even some of the more modern ones that have been renovated in recent years are not even close to their european siblings.
Ah yes, the franchise model where there's no consistency from store to store.
