Free ants on offer in Cambridge
By adamg on Tue, 06/27/2023 - 9:41am
Somebody in Cambridge is giving away a colony of C. pennsylvanicus, a variety of carpenter ants, complete with a formicarium:
Queen with 15-20 workers in Tar Heel Ants mini-hearth. I’m relocating internationally so cannot bring. Colony recently had some die-offs and could use some TLC!
You'll need to pick up by July 1, though.

As this is New England
there should be no "ant"- "aunt" confusion here - you're getting the bugs.
Ayup
My wife and I were both born westa Worcester, so we both refer to uncles' wives as "ants," but our Rozzie-born and bred daughter, who doesn't have much of a Boston accent otherwise, talks about her "ahnts."
As a southerner...
The correct pronunciation is "aint," like Aunt Bea on Andy Griffith.
Of course, I was in my 30s before I learned that asphalt wasn't actually spelled as "aishphalt" and Ars Taters don't actually exist but Irish Potatoes (canned) do.
I had four uncles,
two awnts, and two ants.

I'm from south Brooklyn originally, and we called them "ants" as well. I imagine that might bug some people, though. (Oops, bad pun -- ants -- the crawly kind -- are Hymenoptera, not Hemiptera, so they're not actually "bugs".)
I wonder whether most people in the U.S. as a whole say "ants" or "ahnts"? Although a couple of my aunts were rather creepy-crawly anyway, so in their case there wasn't much difference. (Others were quite nice, but those aren't as interesting to remember, are they?)
Ads that fall flat
The Geico commercial about the house with the aunt problem died on the vine here.
aunt / ant
we refer to my fathers sister as aunt marie; but, my fathers brothers wife is my ant jocy.
Do ducks eat ants?
And would I be able to transport this installation on skates? Just asking for a friend.
No way!
No way I'd ever voluntarily bring carpenter ants into my house! I've worked hard to get rid of them and keep them out. They can cause a lot of damage.
Magoo sez
Similarly, one doesn’t fart, one fahts. Or on occasion one can let out a wicked bad rippa. Magoo.
Ants- I want them!
Hello! I am a biology and zoology teacher in Cambridge (Rindge and Latin high school) and a former ant researcher at BU. I teach my students about ant anatomy and pinning. I have a working Pavement Ant colony in my classroom (T. caespitum) and have always wanted a C. Pennsylvanicus one! I teach my students how to care for the ants and study them. I could pick it up from you! I have a car. I’m located in the Medford/Cambridge area.
I look forward to hearing back!

I think
I think you need to follow the links and get in touch with the Cantabridgian Ant Rancher "ambx327" because it doesn't seem to indicate that Adam is part of the transaction, although maybe he could agree to go 50/50 with ambx327 on "free".
the smallest animal in the world...
from the largest pencil in the world ?
Tempting!
I've found a few carpenter ant queens and considered keeping one in a formicarium—until I realized that since she still had her wings, she might not have mated yet, so I wouldn't get a colony.
