Kidney-transplant donor apologizes for Ted Williams traffic
By adamg on Sat, 07/15/2023 - 1:18pm
The Ted Williams Tunnel was closed for a bit on Thursday morning so crews carrying human kidneys could get them to hospitals more quickly for transplants. One of the donors, Megan Morant, apologized as her kidney was rushed to Logan Airport:
Sorry about the traffic, Boston

They could have transported
They could have transported the kidney onto a speedboat across the harbor to a waiting medical vehicle on the Boston side of the Harbor.
Weird.
Usually live donors travel to the recipient's hospital for the donation procedure to minimize kidneys' time spent in transport.
Maybe part of multiple connected donations?
Sometimes with live donors there can be several donors and recipients matched up, with most donors providing a kidney on behalf of a loved one who then receives a kidney from someone else in the group that’s an appropriate biological match. It wouldn’t surprise me if a given hospital couldn’t handle all the donations simultaneously.
Why would you apologize for something like that?
Sounds to me more like attention seeking for doing a good deed.
Seems fine to me
I mean, I don't know that it was meant as an apology in the first place, but it's fun to be able to say "sorry about my kidney shutting down the city". No harm there.
Or, she might genuinely be a bit embarrassed at causing such a fuss, and actually wanted to apologize. (I know people who would apologize for bleeding on you if you stabbed them. No, I don't know whether they're Canadian.)
Also, donating a kidney is a serious surgical undertaking with significant acute and chronic risk to the donor and with a considerable lead-up, not something one does on a lark. So in any case it's not like she went out of her way to make a silly joke for attention. (And if she had? Fine! I'd accept the price.)
You know what
Kidney donors deserve any attention they would like. There aren't too many more significant, medically-ethical ways for someone to deliberately and thoughtfully give to someone else to save their life than a kidney.
When my ticket is up, they've got my consent to take any of my organs they can use, but I'm not sure I could give any of mine up while I'm still using them, even if its something I have two of and only need one of them to live a healthy life.
And you know what else? We are talking about kidney and organ donation as a result of this, so that's good too.
That it raises consciousness…
… about organ donation, is a good thing. I won’t argue against that.
But I come from the old school attitude that doing a good deed brings satisfaction in itself. If she wants pats on the back, that’s okay. But her way of asking for attention, by spinning it as an apology, seems dishonest.
Unless, as another commenter suggested, it’s deep sarcasm to shame complainers, then kudos to her.
Sounds like projection
You got a few words and inferred a bunch of stuff from that with no basis whatsoever. Sounds like projection.

hear, hear, brian

What's your point?
What's your point?
Seriously?!
If your life is so inconvenienced by a potentially life saving organ transplant delivery, you're so incredibly privileged. Just imagine if it was a loved one to you.
MGH has helicopter service...
And Logan seems an easy path. There is a certain braggdocio to this story... does she also post about holding the elevator for someone or if she adds garlic to a recipe?
Wait are you comparing a
Wait are you comparing a kidney donation to adding garlic to a recipe? Come on lol
I think if you have your body cut open to save someone else's life you should have a free humble brag card you can use.
Opposite is true. Not using garlic...
... in a dish that usually requires garlic, and it being deliciously garlicky but breath friendly, would be something to brag about.
Please anyone with a good garlicky tasting garlic bread recipe that doesn't come with breath issues, please brag and post it!
Another one projecting?
What is it with you people? Do you think she was given the choice as to how her kidney was delivered? Give it a rest.
You are very fond of “projection”.
Must be your go to defense when you are mad at yourself or you get indigestion from too much garlic.
Who here has said she had a choice in how it was delivered? But it was entirely her choice to take advantage of it to do the humble brag thing about her donation.
I'm so sorry that your are so important
Heaven forfend that you were at all inconvenienced while in your almighty important car.
Honestly I think people who
Honestly I think people who are upset mostly just want to know why this could not be done by helicopter rather than shutting down half the city. I personally haven't seen a single explanation for why that wasn't feasible and what the plans are for if this is needed again in the future.
I think shutting down the highways for this was justified if absolutely needed. I just want to know why the helicopter option was not used. I think the people who made this choice owe the city that explanation and it isn't heartless to want to know.
As for the donor, I'm seeing people hating on her for her humblebrag but I believe anyone who cuts themselves open to save another life has absolute permission to brag about it. Let's face it most of us brag about much smaller feats online on a daily basis.
Speedboat? A bit bouncy.
Speedboat? A bit bouncy. Maybe not the best thing with transplant organs.
Helicopter? Weren't there all sorts of thunderstorm watches that morning? Maybe helicopters were grounded? Also, maybe they were engaged on other emergencies.
Bragging or strangely apologetic. Maybe she was just telling complainers to suck it, and the sarcasm wasn't sufficiently clear.
I'm going to assume that the State Police or whomever had traffic data (gasp - Google maps!) that showed for whatever endpoints they were concerned with, Ted Williams would actually be quicker than Tobin Bridge or whatever other alternatives.
Traffic, Delays, Etc.
Nobody seems to grumble when half the city is shut down for a championship Duck Boat parade.
Yes, they do!
Yes, they do!
A few, anyway.
They ask why it has to be in town in the middle of the work week and on a school day, and why it can't wait until Saturday when it won't disrupt the lives of tens of thousands of disinterested people, and get answered....
But Brraaaadyy!!! But Groooonnnk! We can't expect them to wait a few days or come back! They have PLAAAANNNNES to catch!!!
Am I nobody?
But you have a point. I’m always amazed that there is barely any public uproar. Or at least it’s not reported.
It would be good to know why less disruptive means of transporting the kidneys were not used. There is probably a very good reason, it would just be good to know what it was.
