We got our giant recycling bin today

But now that Lugo's gone, who goes into it? Matsuzaka?

The kidlet's getting old. I offered to take her for a ride in it before we actually throw anything/anybody in (if you haven't seen them yet - they're so big they have wheels) and she turned me down. This is a kid who used to love getting into a laundry hamper and being taken for a ride around the house.

Where'd you get yours? We're in Somerville and dying for one of those enormous lidded ones on wheels. We only go through a 1/2 bag of trash per week but at least 3 bins worth of recyclables...

Boston is, um, rolling them out across the city over the next 10 months.

Now to go up and start putting a dent in the giant pile of newspapers we have because we've been too lazy to either put them in paper bags or tie them up with twine.

Huh? We're both in Roslindale, and I got one several weeks after they were first announced last year. You would think they'd hit all of Rozzie all at once?

I use the old bins indoors, and keep the monstrosity at the end of the driveway.

Best of luck to you when the snow hits.

We're almost in Hyde Park, so we're in the Hyde Park DPW zone, I think, which means we weren't part of the West Roxbury/Roslindale pilot.

Oh, yeah, I can see it being fun in the snow :-).

Our small bins got busted to pieces a couple of years ago - so i called the city to get some new bins. We live in a 7 unit building - not a 6 unit building so we were told we had to buy ours. The city had a list of suppliers - you might be able to get a copy from city hall. Note - some of the trash collectors won't take them because they are too heavy when full so I'd check to make sure it will get picked up before ponying out the $75.

I still the Japanese method of making people sort their own stuff (putting different sorts of things in different color bags) -- and fining people who don't follow the rules -- makes more sense. (they started doing this in the 50s, at least).

It's an ISD code violation to have recyclables in the trash. I really wish they'd fine people for this.

I think they should also fine people for putting perfectly usable items in the trash or on the curb. Seems like they'd be able to do so under the currently worded code about "recyclables" not going in the trash. (After doing some flyering and whatnot to make sure everyone knows only to put trash in the trash). Boomerangs or Mass Coalition for the Homeless or Cradles to Crayons would be happy to take the stuff so it's getting used instead of in landfills.

Also would be awesome if the city did curbside compost pickup for people who don't compost at home.

Now that you mention it, curbside compost pickup is supposed to start in Somerville soon.

We in Hopkinton actually have a "trash patrol" that will check people's trash for recyclables, and if they notice too many recyclables, they will leave a note, not pick up the trash, and even levy a fine. The only reason I know about this is that I've read letters in the local paper about it.

But don't get the idea that we're a super green town - far from it. Not even close. People whine incessantly about the trash patrol, and forced recycling. A "pay as you throw" trash program was proposed, and you'd think someone proposed a licensed brothel - people are very adamant about their trash. Small-town issues can be entertaining, and can also drive you nuts. ;-)

Newton got theirs months ago, but we're still waiting here in Waltham...right now we're using random bins from other towns..

A big rolling recycling bin would make my life so much easier...why do I have the feeling that Southie will be last neighborhood to get them? Hurry please!

...to reserve parking spaces? :)

...because I'm someone who will shovel out their car after a storm but leave it there until the snow melts, then take the T or walk if I need to get to work or anywhere else. If I move the car I don't pretend I own a piece of public street, and don't expect the space to be open when I get back. Some of my neighbors, meanwhile...

And come on, space savers can be seen all over this city in the winter, in every neighborhood! It is an art form in Southie, I'll grant you ;)

Wow. Roxbury got something before Southie. That must be a first.

When someone from Southie has the gumption to run for mayor! :-)

Got our big blue bin and it has made my life a million times easier! Recycling and sorting in a tiny studio apartment = disaster. Now everything goes in the big blue bin, and it's like my place got 100 SF bigger!

Wondering what will happen when it snows, it will be a pain to drag that thing up to the street. On the other hand - the bins will double as parking spot savers!

Adam, you're a fun Daddy offering to give rides
like that :=).

I remember using one of those two-wheeler moving
things and zooming up and down our driveway on
it. It had a sharp edge to sit on but it
was fun anyway.
