The machine Ian refers to is in use by the big leagues already. Many campaigns just do the elevated print but down in DC it is not all that uncommon for Congressmen to have an "autopen" that is there for signing items and response letters to people back home.
The worst autopen faux pas I have personally been involved in was when Rudy Giuliani came to my college to speak in 2003 for the annual speaker series. Six students were invited to attend for free and we were told that we were going to meet Rudy and he was going to sign a copy of his book for each of us (I am a Democrat but was invited due to my involvement in the Political Science Academy club along with the College Republicans officers.) So after dinner we stood in line at the hotel conference room with all of the high paying guests and met him, took our picture and were sent on our way. A week later I get the book from the development office, on the inside of the hard cover was a white square sticker with his autopenned signature. I thought it was hilarious the republicans were a little more dismayed.
Yeah, the handwriting actually looks more like a 2nd or 3rd grader. But could just as easily be that of an adult who doesn't have great fine motor skills. Maybe the volunteer is an elder or person with a disability. Or maybe just a person with crappy handwriting.
