Imagine it's 1968 at the Pru ...

So a couple of white teens think nothing of going into a cosmetics store and doing some blackface. Oh, right, but it's really 2024.

Sephora responds to the video:

Sephora’s top priority is to create a welcoming and inclusive shopping experience for all. We are extremely disappointed by the behavior of these shoppers at our Prudential Center location, and as such, they were asked to leave our premises.

She and her kids are lucky that I no longer work there. I would have dragged them all.

How about not linking to fascist sites, please?

Karen you just destroyed these teens lives with this racist stunt. The mean girls better apologize quick because they will be outed and humiliated before the day is over.

There are some terrific shots of the actual Pru plaza in 1968 in the original "Thomas Crown Affair". It looked great. Fortunately no trashy people like the ones in this video are seen.

LOL Boston was the epitome of class and good taste in 1968, no doubt.

I hope this video follows them around when they apply for jobs.

More like 2024, I think you meant to say.

that very short clip doesn’t make clear exactly what’s going on. If I saw it without framing I’d assume they were getting chastised for using so much mask cream without paying. The text and voice-over imply a particular narrative but is there a longer clip that is more conclusive?

(i dont have an x account so i just see a 28 second loop)

Always possible that things are taken out of context but behavior like this has been seen in other places.

Assuming it's accurate, according to this TikTok which apparently replicates the video posted on Twitter, Sephora responded denouncing the behavior.

EDIT: Here's the link to the Atlanta Black Star article that first reported Sephora's response and confirmation of the incident: https://atlantablackstar.com/2024/02/12/we-are-extremely-disappointed-se...

…there’s no additional evidence in that article - it simply recounts the video’s text and narration, and quotes second hand comments from viewers.

I don’t see Sephora’s extremely non-specific “denunciation” as confirmational - to me it reads like what one would expect from a butt-covering corporation regardless of the details.

The rest of the linked article goes on to decry the behavior of young girls at stores like this not because of racist shenanigans, but economic ones - abusing sample privileges and staff good-will.

I’m not saying that racist teenagers don’t exist, or that these weren’t an example of such, but I am worried that it’s not just obviously reactionary/rightist sources that are trying to make us knee-jerk, uncritical consumers of “otherism” these days.

"They're bigots Jeff."

to the tune of

"He's dead Jim."

I've added their reaction to the video to the original post.

Might I suggest that misusing samples and disrupting staff and customers would be a greater sin in the corporation’s eyes?

Might I suggest dropping the racism-enabling behavior? You are a drunkards dream, dear.

You seem to use it a lot when your assumptions are challenged and you don’t have a reasoned or rational counterpoint. And the insincere endearment at the end is kind of creepy and neg-y.

I get why you might be quick on the nasty with those commenters who regularly dismiss/snark at you, apparently motivated by a combination of differing ideologies + misogyny. That’s not me.

ad hominem is lazy and lame

So is sea lioning, and that's what you're doing here.

I’m not. I’m not making escalating requests, not moving goalposts. The dozen seconds or so of video is clearly edited in several places - I asked if there was more raw footage. Anons claimed so but I spent a good chunk of time and cant find it (and apparently neither can you or the other people my question is upsetting). The only links provided are just copies of the same article with third party comments on the same few seconds.

I don’t like being manipulated, regardless of whether the people behind the manipulation believe they’re on the side of the angels or not. And claiming “sea-lioning” when someone asks a question in a civil manner is just a way of avoiding legitimate engagement. Go check my uHub posts - you’ll see I’m not pursuing some sort of weird ‘anti-woke’ agenda.

"Refuting" is a form of racism.

Form: "That can't be racist because ..."
Tactics: Preempting accountability for racism by denying intent as a defense

Refuting denies that racism is a problem, claiming that it is not a relevant factor in certain situations. Tactics include demanding absolute certainty to prove something is indeed racist. Such demands are often followed by dismissing whatever evidence is provided.

According to the NYT, Sephora may not have been risky just about kicking the girls out.

And of course the fuller story is worse than originally presented.

This was circulating on Instagram last week (reliable accounts and longer video). It wasn't even a Sephora employee who called them out. Disgusting behavior by that mom and those teens. Not sure if they were identified though.

I looked for longer version of the video but couldn’t find one. Also looked at several more articles which are all just almost identical copies of the same article.

Just let them do their thing. No need to stop them. That way everyone can see how moronic they are.

That isn't just talk - they mean it!

I don't wear much makeup, but found myself in need of "business drag" stage makeup for sticking my face in front of a room. I hadn't bought any since the pandemic started and my daughter-out-law recommended Sephora.

I was sort of dazed walking in, but was immediately greeted warmly, listened to, and handed off to someone who really knew how to help me find what I needed. The staff there is great and the place is very welcoming.

I would have found this bullshit intimidating and off-putting, particularly if the staff did nothing and I'm white. I can't imagine how it would repel a black customer to see these little shits and their piece of shit "adult" minder running riot without consequences.

You must be seriously out of touch to think this will accomplish anything helpful, apart from adding to the mental comfort of people like you who aren't being targeted.

Apparently they were here on their return to Guatemala. Margarita and her disrespectful children are probably safely ensconced in their home country by now. I guess this is one of many reasons why so many people flee from that country.
