Tragedy or farce?

Err ...

Above: Erinob sums it up.

Ooh, look, you can already buy I Survived the Mooninite Attack t-shirts!

Todd Vanderlin posted about the gizmos two weeks ago.

Michael on ChaosFactor: It's equal parts amazing, damning, and jaw-droppingly stupid that the city of Boston could be brought to a stand-still by 5 modified Lite-Brites.

Mass. Marrier: It kind of makes you wonder how they'll react if there is a real threat.

TC sums up:

I'm no fan of the security theater culture that has sprung up post-9/11, but I wonder if we could really have expected law enforcement in Boston to react in any other way to the sight of a circuit board and batteries and wires hanging from one of the main supports of I-93 than to assume the worst. And I don't think it's fair to expect somebody among them to be a fan of Adult Swim and figure it out for themselves in a short amount of time.

Jonelle: Seriously? Lite-Brites?

Ace: I'm less than sympathetic to the ATHF guys, because I don't find the show funny and am tired of people insisting that it is.

Brian McFadden: That show is still on?

Despite the Master Shake air freshner in my car, I haven't found Aqua Teen Hunger Force to be funny for at least two years.

David on Blue Mass. Group: Turner Broadcasting can go f%#& itself:

What on God's green earth were these people thinking, attaching weird-looking blinky-light devices under a bunch of bridges, apparently without even bothering to alert anyone in the city as to what they were doing? ... At the very least, the CEO of Turner Broadcasting should be paraded out at a press conference where he or she issues an abject, groveling apology to the Mayor, the Governor, and the people of Boston, and generously agrees to reimburse the city double the cost of the expense it incurred in responding to these things.

N.E. Republican: I still say we throw them from the Longfellow bridge.

Deb Geisler: Somebody smack Ted Turner for me?

Whose frickin' idea was this idiot marketing campaign, anyway? I want to find out what ad firm was behind it so I tell my students not to work there...since they are clearly idiots.

Carmen Two friends and I saw one of these hanging on a building in Central Square this weekend:

None of us thought, "BOMB!" Two of us said, "Look, a Mooninite!" And the other of us (me) said, "What's a Mooninite?"

Dave Copeland watches the press conference by city and state honchos:

As Deval Patrick said things like "It's a hoax and it's not funny," I was wondering what if it hadn't entirely been a hoax? What if the first wave had been the phony "bombs," and shortly after new outlets started reporting that the Governor said we had nothing to worry about, the real bombs started going off?

Michael Femia faces his first disagreement with Deval Patrick because he thinks the whole thing is pretty funny.

Jeff Egnaczyk: Morons:

I've come to find out that the city of Boston has been freaking out like ninjas because of guerrilla advertisements for Aqua Teen Hunger Force. NECN.com has at least 5 videos up on its website alone. I've heard Islamic terrorism and the IRA mentioned.

Rod Begbie: Somebody at Time Warner's about to get fired, I imagine.

To make sure I'm okay.

Yeah. I didn't suffer any from the Mooninite overlords.

I can only hope they'll let me live out my final days in peace.

In the occasional event that I use my company-paid T pass instead of my bike and torture myself at a very nasty transit hub known as Sullivan Station, I have often wondered why the took out all the garbage cans on the sleazy and seedy lower level, yet left open several pathways to climb up under I-93 and place a loaded backpack at a strategic location for mayhem.

A freeway. A freight line. A commuter rail line. A subway line. One of two possible land routes out of Charlestown. All in one blow! Think about it.

I don't know what Aqua Teen Hunger Force is.

I don't even know which channel is Cartoon network.

I didn't even hear about it until 7:00 or so.

But I'm glad we're so on the ball.

Or something.

Not exactly sure.

Jack Bauer would never have let this happen.

He would have established a perimeter and Cleaux Oui would have figured it out and uploaded the info to his cell.

Mumbles is going to throw the book at 'em.

Whatever.

I think I'll stop typing now.

It's all funny until someone has a
police sniper full metal jacket splodie head them due to a failure to communicate.

People that don't like ATHF are dumb.

Nope, arrested

I can see both sides of this story, but it really does not warrant arresting the poor schlub who was hired to hang the things up.

Channel 4 IDs him as Peter Berdvosky (although I bet that's really Berdovsky - and I bet this is his resume).

How long until a glaring lack of corporate responsibility that exposed a more glaring lack of planning and preparedness to deal with a rush-hour shut-down of the T turns into a massive sacrificial ritual to purify all the bigwigs of any doubt?

Classic Journocidal Boston behavior. The problems aren't the problems, no. The person who exposed the problems for all to see is the problem. Kill him.

Recent Mass. Art grad. My second guess turned out to be almost correct.

At b0st0n LiveJournal, people are already discussing showing up outside his arraignment, tomorrow morning at 9 in City Square, Charlestown.

Arresting him for anything beyond tresspassing is just uncalled for. At most this guy deserves a slap on the wrist. There was no remote intent to cause what happened, and frankly others are more at fault for the "panic" than he is. The media, for one, but also the authorities who allowed this to fester for most of the day even though they knew by mid-morning that this was just LED lights. This guy doesn't even vaugely deserve to go to jail. And I say that as someone who was 90 minutes late to work this morning because of this.

Actually it DOES, the shlub did commit a crime- here it would be littering or vandalism. Just as he would have if his boss had told him to dump the company trash in someone's yard, or post a sign on the bridge. There's no "I did it for money" defence.

His bosses should be charged, too.

certainly not "planting a fake bomb with intent to cause a disruption", or whatever felony he's being charged with.

They wouldn't have been full of bright lights to call attention to themselves, and they wouldn't have waited two weeks to go off. The event proves that real terrorists could have planted and set off bombs without anyone's taking notice beforehand.

Maybe now Boston will do occasional inspection of key vulnerable spots for a while and leave off searching T passengers? (Not likely.)

Boy you just showed your ignorance. I am not even from Boston but I know terrorists are using bombs to trick people.

I noticed some of the other cities were unaware of these things.

If i lived in a city like Boston I would have hoped they reacted like the police force in Boston did.

What would you be writing if they were real bomb and not enough was done.

Remember the idea of using planes as a weapon was dismissed beccause everyone thought no one would ever do this.

Remember 9/11.

How soon we forget. That is sad.

I agree with N.E. Republican, but I want a higher bridge or one that's not over water. They are so enamored of Charlestown (first scare, one lives there and that's where they made there public debut), how about the Prison Point bridge?
