Open Newbury to start June 30: Ten Sundays in a row with no cars on Newbury Street, with two additional Sundays planned for December

The city announced today that Newbury Street will be open only to pedestrians for ten Sundays in a row starting June 30 and running through Sept. 1.
New this year: Newbury Street will be shut to vehicles for two Sundays in December - as a way to encourage holiday shopping - although which two Sundays exactly will be announced later.
As in years past, Open Newbury will shut the street to vehicles between Berkeley Street and Massachusetts Avenue, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.nt of severe weather, with rain dates being announced the Friday evening before a scheduled Open Newbury Sunday.

Including Sept. 1?
Sept. 1 is Sunday, and although the first Monday is Labor Day holiday, Sept. 1 is moving day in Boston. I don't know how much moving truck traffic occurs on Newbury Street, as compared to other areas of Boston (Allston/Brighton Kenmore... you get the picture)
That could be a traffic disaster if moving trucks aren't allowed to traverse Newbury Street on Sept. 1.
Yeah, someone didn't think
Yeah, someone didn't think this through. Wonder if Wu will back-peddle on this. It will be a nightmare in the Back Bay if no one can drive on or cross Newbury on the alphabet streets.
Alleyways
There are alleys on both sides of Newbury. Moving could be preformed on the alleyway in some places. Some sections of the alley don't really have any open area so it wouldn't be true everywhere. Don't know the percentage.

Disappointing
Really disappointing they didn’t meaningfully expand it. Newbury not only has parallel streets it also has alleys. It should be incredibly easy to permanently pedestrianize it. If politicians can’t make that happen it should have at least been pedestrianized for the whole summer like they do in Montreal. And if that is still too much at least every weekend. We can and should go so much further to make places for people instead of cars. Driving on Newbury sucks anyway.

I know it's fun that Newbury Street is no cars on the weekends.
The retail dynamic however is different on the weekdays.
Has anyone asked the merchants on Newbury Street what they think about pedestrianizing it full time? Perhaps not everyone might be on board with your suburbanization dream.
Someone said, closing it to cars makes the sidewalks bigger. Just remember, Winter Street is all pedestrian. You going shopping there anytime soon? Bet not.
Boylston Street has much wide sidewalks. How's that retail experience east of Copley going? If you are in need of vacant retail, its the joint.
Remember, if you want that mall experience everyday that most of you had in your youth, the South Shore Plaza can be accessed by bus from Quincy Center.

That's what people are trying to do to Newbury.
Weekends are great but the daytime customer and business base is different.
Just remember, if you want a really good open air non-car, or mostly non-car shopping experience, Downtown Crossing or Quincy Market awaits your dollars.
Are they trying to make malls John?
Cause you said malls are also car-centric but said people are trying to make Newbury St. a mall by.......making it not car-centric? Please show your work for the class.

Step out of your motorized living room some time and try walking across Boylston Street. You might learn a thing or two about the real world.

I was walking up and down Boylston Street every weekday back in the late 80's when you were only 58.
The sidewalks on Boylston east of Copley are the widest in the city.
