The crowd was curious but well behaved as the new mega-Trader Joe's opened this morning

Michael Ratty was among Trader Joe's fans lining up this morning outside the new, bigger store on Boylston Street - up the street from the old, world's-smallest Trader Joe's - in the building made famous by Boston Legal between Clarendon and Berkeley.

Once inside, employees gave those shoppers a welcome worthy of a Super Bowl:

I wonder if they had to remove a liquor license from one of the other stores. I know when they opened the Barry's Corner store they took it from the Memorial Drive store.

But the new Boylston shop got a new license from the licensing board in May of last year. Unlike with restaurant liquor licenses, the city still has package-store licenses available

Worth pointing out that Trader Joe's is an anti-worker union busting company that subscribes to the right wing effort to declare the NLRB unconstitutional. They are literally trying to dismantle the regulatory state so they can do whatever the hell they want to their employees.

TJs is owned by mega company Albrechts, they own Aldi. They are pretty cutthroat. Food and retail are pretty cutthroat though....

There are also some pre-TV Magoo theatrical cartoons you can find on YouTube; that iteration of Magoo was less sanguine (slightly more grouchy) than the TV version. There was also the 1977 "What's New, Mr. Magoo" where he had a dog, McBarker, who replaced his (slightly problematic) valet Cholly.

Chains have consistent branding. There will be no surprises.

However, bigger store means room for products, brands and categories not previously seen around here.
Like the Magoo Marital Aides Aisle - THAT would be a surprise.
